Around 53 million people in Europe live in areas at risk of flooding.
From 1980 to 2024, floods accounted for 47% of all weather‑ and climate‑related economic losses in the EU, an average of €8.6 billion every year.
That’s why anticipating risks and responding fast matters more than ever.
Through the Mechanism and tools such as the European Flood Awareness System, the EU helps countries before, during and after floods: from early warnings up to 10 days in advance to emergency teams on the ground when disaster strikes.
