Việt Nam’s carbon market is officially under way, marking a major step towards turning emission reductions into tradable assets.
During its opening session at the Hanoi Stock Exchange, more than 1,200 tonnes of CO2 equivalent were traded under the VN2025 allowance code, with prices closing at VNĐ130,000 per tonne.
Trading has since remained subdued, however, raising a crucial question: can the fledgling market attract enough buyers and sellers, expand the supply of standardised carbon products and build the reliable data needed to function effectively?
Experts say low liquidity is expected during the pilot stage, as businesses assess their emission quotas and become familiar with trading procedures. The longer-term challenge will be to strengthen regulations, standardise carbon credits and broaden participation by businesses and investors.
