"We must distinguish formality from reality. The technique is a formality, part of the movement, but kata is reality, its inner use, and soul. You can perform kata with perfect technique, but if your soul is not in it, then it has no value, it is not real. I remember when I started training in the Shotokan dojo, one of my seniors told me that when Waka Sensei performs a kata, those watching have a sense of danger, it seemed like a real fight. When we speak about kata, we have to be able to transfer our inner strength and our determination into every movement, whether it's attacking or defending. If you don't feel anything while performing a kata, then that kata was not performed correctly. It is not a matter of technique, some students do not have refined technique, but in their movements, you recognize the danger and they have much more determination than some other practitioners who perform the kata with perfect technique.
