Commander of the Burkina Faso branch of the so-called ‘Islamic State,’ as the t*rrorist organisation calls itself, Abou Zeid Al-Burkinabi was reportedly k*lled on 17 August 2026. The Burkina Faso Armed Forces are said to have k*lled him during their clashes with t*rror group JNIM in the towns of Bangao and Dorkoye, located in Séno province. Other t*rrorists alongside Abou Zeid Al-Burkinabi were also k*lled. Burkina Faso’s military seized motorcycles, weapons, phones, and other belongings.
Burkina Faso’s first t*rrorist attack was indeed recorded in 2015, following a few years of attacks on next-door neighbour Mali. The group now known as ISIS-Sahel (or the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara) originated in 2015 when Algerian militant Adnan Abu Walid al-Sahrawi broke away from the al-Qaeda-linked al-Mourabitoun to pledge allegiance to ISIS, a pledge officially recognised by ISIS leadership in 2016. Operating across the volatile tri-border region of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, ISIS-Sahel has sought to establish a hardline caliphate through brutal attacks on security forces and civilians.
The destabilisation of the Sahel is linked to NATO’s destruction of Libya. When NATO and NATO-linked allied groups assassinated then-leader Muammar Gaddafi, a power vacuum led to chaos in the North African country. Rebel groups were able to seize weapons formerly belonging to the now-slain Libyan government and use those weapons to begin an insurgency in Northern Mali.
In more recent years, Western countries and Western allies, most notably France, stand accused of arming, backing, and providing intelligence to t*rrorist organisations, as per the leaders of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.
