Over the past two decades, Bolivia has become known for its far-reaching social and political transformations. But understanding these experiments also means looking at the indigenous traditions, social movements and concepts of community and nature that have shaped them.

Christian and Marxist/Socialist Perspectives on Hope and Structural Exploitation

Dialop participated in this year's Annual Conference of the European Academy of Religion in Rome, where we hosted the panel: "𝐀𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐱𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐨𝐩𝐞."

The panel featured Declan O'Byrne, Walter Baier, Angelina Giannopoulou, and Isaac Stanley, and was chaired by José Manuel Pureza.

The discussion brought together Christian and Marxist scholars to examine how both traditions understand inequality and exploitation as structural realities, while exploring hope –whether articulated through eschatological promise, or the socialist utopian horizon– as a shared point of dialogue and a source of resistance to injustice. In light of today's global challenges, the panel reflected on the potential of Christian–Marxist dialogue to build common social and political horizons against structural exploitation.

Bringing a radical critique of inequality and exploitation, and presenting the dialogue between Marxist voices and Christianity and theology, to a conference of this kind is one of Dialop's key contributions.
