En Mars 2023, en partenariat avec différents acteurs du FMMD, le pays hôte du FMMD- la France- a organisé différentes discussions aux bureaux de l’Organisation Internationale du Travail à Genève. Le but de ces tables rondes était de se concentrer et débattre des priorités principales fixée par le pays hôte du FMMD, l’impact de la crise climatique sur les migrations ainsi que la meilleure inclusion des travailleurs issus de la migration au travers de l’adaptation au réchauffement climatique. Il est primordial en effet de réfléchir et rassembler des idées avant le début du Sommet du FMMD en Janvier 2024. Découvrez ici les points à retenir de ces débats à fois intriguant et stimulant.

🔎 Catch up on the reflections that emerged from the thematic workshop: Impact of Climate Change on Labour Mobility! 🔍

In March 2023, in partnership with a broad range of GFMD stakeholders, the Chair of the GFMD- France- organised a workshop at the headquarters of the International Labour Organisation in Geneva. The aim of the different roundtables was to focus and engage on the overarching priorities set by the GFMD Chair, namely the impact of climate change on migration, as well as the promotion of better economic inclusion of migrants through climate adaptation. It is crucial to brainstorm and reflect prior the start of the GFMD Summit in January 2024. Let us summarise here the key take-aways from these intriguing and stimulating conversations.

🛬 ADEPT’s President, M Alexis Neuberg, was present at the European Dialogue of the Diaspora in Madrid with the Chief of Mission of IOM España, Maria Jesús Herrera! 🛫

​Organized by the IOM Office in Spain OIM España and the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores, Unión Europea y Cooperación de España, all part of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union’s framework 🇪🇸🇪🇺, this meeting allowed diaspora network organizations like ADEPT to make their voices heard. It demonstrated diasporas’ vital role as development actors in their countries of origin as well as trusting partners to key actors in their countries of residence.

M Neuberg highlighted ADEPT’s advocacy for more direct dialogue between diasporas and their country of origin along with supporting overarching reforms to break down barriers to development and partnerships. M Neuberg also announced that ADEPT is working on a Diaspora Engagement Charter, outlining the best practices and possible modifications needed to allow for trust-worthy and successful involvement of diasporas within their countries of origin. En Juin 2023, le pays hôte du FMMD, la France, a organisé différentes discussions au Palais de la Porte Dorée où vient juste de rouvrir le Musée de l’Histoire de l’Immigration. Le but de ces tables rondes était de se concentrer et débattre des priorités fixées par le pays hôte du FMMD, notamment par exemple du rôle clé des diasporas non seulement comme acteur économique et social dans les processus de migration et de développement, MAIS également dans le secteur culturel. Il est primordial en effet de réfléchir et rassembler des idées avant le début du Sommet du FMMD en Janvier 2024. Découvrez ici les points à retenir de ces débats à fois intriguant et stimulant.

A cause de sa structure, il est difficile de mesurer tangiblement l’utilité du forum à avoir offert des solutions aux enjeux posés par la migration et le développement. Au bout du compte, le Rapport Finale du pays hôte n’est pas légalement contraignant et ne force aucun pays à agir. TOUTEFOIS, le rayonnement positif du FMMD et l’efficacité des dialogues qui en découlent ont permis, malgré les critiques, d’obtenir des résultats extraordinaires autour du monde. L’initiative de la Plateforme pour les Partenariats ou ses contributions au Pacte Mondial sur les Migrations (PMM) sont témoins des exploits du FMMD.

📣 ​Read this if you have ever wondered what the GFMD has achieved! 📣

Due to its framework, it is difficult to measure its usefulness for helping offer tangible solutions to challenges posed by migration and development. At the end of the day, the Chairmanship’s Final Report is not legally binding for any states to enact. YET, the GFMD’s positive outreach to various stakeholders and its efficiency in dialogue, despite the possible critics, has helped deliver strong results around the world. The GFMD’s biggest achievements remain the Platform for Partnership initiative and its contributions to the Global Compact for Migration.
