Did you know the EU started as an idea on cigarette papers? That the pages of the 1957 Treaty of Rome were thrown out by the cleaners by accident and the 6 EEC members ended up signing an empty book? If your Dutch is good you can listen to these incredible stories on the VRT Radio 1 podcast ‘The Miracle of Schuman.’ Caroline de Gruyter is interviewed in the final episode. We went to meet her at the Bozar earlier this month. She is Europe correspondent and columnist for the Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad. In her new book comparing the European Union with the Habsburg Empire she says Europeans like to complain that the European Union is so divided, so slow and so weak. But believe it or not, the Habsburg Empire was just like that. Time wasting, avoiding conflict, permanent reform and making ugly compromises were cornerstones of Habsburg rule. With ‘fortwursteln’, muddling through, the emperors gave many peoples, languages and cultures a roof over their heads – and that for no less than 600 years. The EU, which is equally multinational, can learn something from this. Could it be that Europe's greatest weaknesses are strengths at the same time? And that Europe by definition does everything halfway, and is never finished?

‘Beter wordt het niet: Een reis door het Habsburgse Rijk en de Europese Unie’ (It doesn't get any better: A journey through the Habsburg Empire and the European Union) can be ordered here: http://www.carolinedegruyter.eu/ -2

You can listen to the ‘The Miracle of Schuman’ podcast here: https://www.radio-belgie.be/podcasts/het-mirakel-van-schuman The history of the EU was not written in one day. What started with an idea on cigarette papers has turned into an international collaboration between 27 European countries. Follow Prof. Hendrik Vos and Sven Speybrouck on their road trip through European history and step into a unique story world! One you never thought you'd want to know.

🎨 🇺🇦 Ukrainian artist Yevgenia Belorusets was in Brussels last week for the inauguration of an art installation, a metal table forged in Kharkiv with the text from one day in her war time diary carved into it. A diary which she published in der Spiegel (DE).

The diary depicts the effects of the Russian invasion on Ukraine’s people. One heart breaking entry was about the post office workers who were shot dead in their mail truck whilst risking their lives to deliver pensions to the elderly. Isolated elderly, too frail and unsafe to leave their homes and in much need of human contact.

👉 Please visit the table in the Citizens’ Garden, Rue Vautier 62, Ixelles which is in the Leopold quarter: between the entrance of the European Parliament and museum of Belgian artist Antoine Wiertz.

👉 The Leopold quarter in Ixelles once had a thriving artists community in the 19th century, along with Antoine Wiertz, until redevelopment of the area which would later house the European Parliament. 🎨 The EP, active local community and Ixelles commune would like to see the artists return and the council planted a seed in the KULT XL Ateliers in Rue Wiertz, 23 1050 Ixelles https://culture.ixelles.be/en/kult-xl-ateliers/.

👉 You can visit the artists in the ateliers and more than 100 other locations in Ixelles this week from Thursday 15 to Sunday 18 September, ‘we art xl’ puts visual arts in the spotlight by bringing together 200 artists, craftsmen, makers and cultural initiatives. 🎨 Map:https://www.weartxl.brussels/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/19_08_WEARTXL_MAP_2022_VF.pdf

“We should have listened to those who know Putin” said Ursula von der Leyen about the war in her State of the European Union speech yesterday. We already reduced our dependency on Russian gas from 40% to 9%. She also gave examples of how EU citizens are helping to reduce their energy consumption and the EU’s proposal to cap the revenues of companies that produce electricity at a low cost. “Profits must be shared and channelled to those who need it the most.” Protecting democracy was another topic in her speech. As members of the CCAE - Ixelles we are hopeful to hear in the SOTEU that positive change is coming our way and keen to see how our participation as EU citizens, in the democratic process, is taking affect and what more we can do. We are pleased to learn that the Citizens' Panels (which we submitted Ixelles residents proposals to) that were central to the Conference on the Future of Europe, will now become a regular feature of our democratic life. She also spoke about the transition to a net-zero economy, securing critical raw minerals and harmonizing tax rules for small businesses.

You can read a full transcript of her speech here: https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/ov/speech_22_5493 and hear some reactions from Brussels citizens in the room, one of which is Gijsbert Wierink a critical raw materials expert and already wrote up his reaction: https://plutonic-rma.com/blog/this-is-a-time-for-resolve-not-appeasement What did you think?

🎬 BEHIND THE SCENES! 🎬
The Musée d'Ixelles 🏛 Museum van Elsene will reopen in 2024 totally renovated, it will become your second home! A place to work, date, network, learn from guides, breakfast, lunch and aperitif on it’s new terrace and let the children play in the garden; a space for creatives to showcase; to meet new love or make new friends amongst old ones like Magritte, Khnopff, Delvaux, Brusselmans and Lautrec! Great conversation guaranteed in a stimulating atmosphere!

👉 We spent an evening with the energetic Director Claire Leblanc and team, beaming with smiles, to discuss the future direction of the museum and how we as an expat and Belgian community can become a part of it! We the CCAE Consultative Council for European Affairs ‘Europeans of Ixelles’ are enthusiastic about this partnership! Feel free to share your thoughts with us!

👉 Where to meet us next after our cinema debate in April? Some of the works in the Ixelles museum are currently out on loan and from 25 and 26 June 2022 in 10 residents homes in Ixelles in the rue Malibran and Blyckaerts neighbourhood, maybe see you there, message us to link up?
