European Committee of the Regions

European Committee of the Regions The Committee of the Regions is the EU's assembly of regional and local representatives coming from all 27 Member States.

Read our Moderation Policy here: https://link.europa.eu/wcHKCq Established in 1994, the CoR was set up to address two main issues. Firstly, about three quarters of EU legislation is implemented at local or regional level, so it made sense for local and regional representatives to have a say in the development of new EU laws. Secondly, there were concerns that there was a widening gap between the p

ublic and the process of European integration; involving the elected level of government closest to the citizens was one way of closing the gap. Its 329 democratically elected members represent the sub-national level (i.e. regions, counties, provinces, municipalities and cities) and ensure that the communities they represent fully participate in the EU's decision-making process. The European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council are obliged to consult the Committee in policy areas affecting regions and cities. more information:

During her visit to Kyiv, CoR President Kata Tüttő was honoured to receive the Order of Princess Olga, one of Ukraine's highest civilian distinctions, awarded by Prime Minister Юлія Свириденко. The CoR will continue to support Ukrainian local and regional authorities' resilience and restoration by all means possible: city to city, leader to leader.

She also spoke at the Governance Dialogue on Inclusive Recovery and Development alongside Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba, highlighting the importance of decentralisation as a reserve for democracy and trust, and sharing insights on the most efficient use in EU funding.

💙 💛 Be a force to help Ukrainian children.

Local authorities in the EU can apply to the Summer camps for Ukrainian youth initiative, a flagship initiative of the European Committee of the Regions and the Association of Ukrainian Cities.

🇭🇷 Several municipalities have already done so, like Zagreb, which hosted summer camps for three years in a row!

Through sport, culture, and fun activities, local communities turn solidarity into actions for those young people affected by the war.

As Ukraine is about to open the first accession negotiations cluster on fundamentals tomorrow, Oleksii Riabykin, Deputy Minister for Development of Communities and Territories, reminds us of something essential at our last session:
The resilience shown every day by Ukraine’s cities and regions in the face of war is not only their own strength; it is a resilience that is helping to build a stronger, safer, better prepared Europe for all.

Europe risks ending up connected only on paper.

The next EU budget must invest in cross-border transport that reaches every region, every city.

Fast connections should promote cohesion, not widen gaps between core regions and the rest of Europe.

Last week in Bratislava, while a new proposal on the future MFF was put forward by Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU 2026 our rapporteur on the Connecting Europe Facility, Juraj Droba together with local and regional leaders, welcomed our President Kata Tüttő to reaffirm that the MFF is MUCH MORE than a budget.

It is about how Europe stays connected.
Physically, economically, and socially.

Congratulations to all the selected partners — we're looking forward to working with you.

Didn't make the cut this time? There's still a way to be part of it. Through the Close to You programme, you can organise your own session connected to the European Week of Regions and Cities — in your own community.

Sessions run from 12 October to 20 December 2026, and can be onsite, hybrid, or fully digital. The programme is open to organisations based in an EU Member State or a country contributing to or participating in an EU programme — including, for the first time, EU candidate and potential candidate countries.

⚡Europe is facing an unprecedented energy crisis.
Cities and regions act directly where the effects on citizens are most visible. The energy transition is not only about becoming greener, but also about fair prices and remaining competitive.
💪 We are calling for a strong, local and fair energy transition!

🏆 Congratulations to the GECT Euregio Senza Confini / EVTZ Euregio Ohne Grenzen, winner of the 2026 "Building Europe across borders" award!

The prize recognises a system that routes emergency calls to the right operations centre along the Italy–Austria border, helping save lives where calls were once wrongly routed across the border.

A well-deserved honorary mention also went to the EGTC Eurorégion Nouvelle-Aquitaine – Euskadi – Navarre for its "Empleo Egunak" project supporting cross-border workers and businesses along the France–Spain border. Part of the Interreg Poctefa. 👏

💬 CoR members Pavel Branda, chair of the European Cross-Border Platform and of the jury, said:

“This year, it has been 20 years since the EGTC regulation came into force and the annual meeting of the European Cross-Border Platform is a living testimony of our work and how far we've come. Cross-border cooperation, as part of European Territorial Cooperation, provides not only an added value to the border regions themselves, but to the EU as a whole: it gives citizens, businesses and public authorities a direct experience of being European. In this regard, the award ‘Building Europe across borders’ underlines the role of EGTCs as a lever for economic growth and job creation, environmental and nature protection. It also recognises their role as promoters of education, social inclusion, cultural heritage and European citizenship.”
