France joins the European countries with a law on assisted dying 🇫🇷
People with a serious and incurable condition, suffering in a way no treatment can relieve, will have the right to medical assistance in voluntary death. Self-administration will be the rule, with a healthcare professional stepping in only when the person is physically unable, a major step forward for patients’ self-determination.

The Convention citoyenne sur la fin de vie begins: 184 randomly selected citizens study and debate the issue for months, and 75.6% come out in favour of opening access to active assistance in dying. From their report, delivered to the government, comes the bill on an issue parliament alone had been unable to resolve.

The Assemblée nationale approves the text at first reading. The Senate opposes it and will reject the bill three times.

As the French Constitution provides, the final word belongs to the Assemblée. And the final word is YES, a victory built by years of civic mobilisation, proof that institutions move when citizens push them. Before it takes effect, the law still needs to pass the Constitutional Council and implementing decrees, but the political decision is made.
