Yesterday, Sunday 7 June, marked 109 years since the start of the Battle of Messines (1917).

Deputy Ambassador Te Aniwa Setters and Defence Attaché Captain James Barnes of the NZ Defence Force were honoured to represent New Zealand 🇳🇿 and pay respects alongside our dear friends from Mesen - Messines 🇧🇪 and the wider community.

We are grateful to those who made this special ceremony happen, and to everyone who joined us in commemorating the brave New Zealand soldiers who came from the uttermost ends of the Earth to fight in Flanders’ Fields 🙏

Great to welcome Emma Verry and David Cannon from New Zealand’s NZ–EU FTA implementation team to Brussels this week, and to catch up with DG TRADE’s outstanding Marianna Molnar to discuss the next chapter of implementation and trade cooperation.

Joined by First Secretary Rohan Chauhan, it was a useful opportunity to exchange views on how the FTA is delivering for businesses and consumers on both sides.

The visit comes at a fitting time. Two years after the NZ–EU FTA entered into force, New Zealand exports to the EU have increased by an additional NZ$3 billion, highlighting the tangible benefits of deeper economic ties between New Zealand and the EU (➡️ https://www.beehive.govt.nz/release/3b-export-surge-under-nz-eu-trade-agreement)

A strong milestone - and a reminder that the NZ–EU FTA and broader trading relationship continues to go from strength to strength.

Ambassador Jen Troup was delighted to join more than 50 ambassadors and diplomats gathered in the Province of Namur for an afternoon of dialogue, discovery, and exchanges focused on education and research. They visited several university facilities, highlighting the region’s academic and scientific excellence.
