This year’s Partnership Day at NATO's Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) offered another opportunity to celebrate global heritage, with 17 partner nations participating.

Representing Australia, Lieutenant Colonel Carney Elias and Lieutenant Colonel Ken Martin proudly shared iconic Aussie favourites, including ANZAC biscuits, Tim Tams, Vegemite, lamingtons and premium wines.

Australia was honoured to contribute to this vibrant showcase of cultural diversity.

Last week, we had the pleasure of bringing together media and spokespeople for our Spring Storytellers' Reception at the Official Residence.

We were privileged to be joined by Indigenous educator, cultural presenter & performer Dhinawan Baker, a Gamillaroi Bigambul descendant. His live painting — incorporating the handprints of attendees — and didgeridoo performance offered powerful insights into Dreaming stories and the role of storytelling in connecting people.

The timing of Dhinawan's performance, at the start of Australian National Reconciliation Week, provided an opportunity to reflect on our desire to create a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2026 – All In – calls on all of us to commit to reconciliation every day.

The evening was a meaningful reminder that, across our different roles, we are all storytellers.

Thank you to all who joined us and contributed to such a memorable occasion.

Unity is the key to ensuring the universal human rights of all people, and we remain dedicated to our work combating violence, exclusion, and discrimination towards LGBTQIA+ persons.

On 26 April 2026, we welcomed Lieutenant General Susan Coyle, Chief of Joint Capabilities, Australian Defence Force, to Belgium following Anzac Day commemorations.

LTGEN Coyle attended the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ieper, a battlefield tour and visited Tyne Cot Cemetery, where she reflected on the sacrifice of those who fought on the Western Front.

Earlier this month, LTGEN Coyle was announced as the next Chief of Army, and the first woman to hold the role. We warmly congratulate her on this significant appointment and thank her for taking the time to visit Belgium and honour our shared history.
