In the first 8 months of 2026, UEF published 1,231 posts, generating 21.6M+ views, 20.8M impressions, 918,700 reactions and almost 64,000 comments.

We are now a community of 119,378 people across Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X and Threads.

But if we want the federalist voice to compete with nationalism, sovereigntism and disinformation, we need the means to make it heard.

The Union of European Federalists (UEF) and the Spinelli Group welcomes the initiative by eleven Member States to stop national vetoes from paralysing the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy.

Domenec Devesa, President of UEF and MEP Raquel Garcia Hermida van der Walle, Chair of the Spinelli Group declare this initiative confirms what federalists have long argued: unanimity is increasingly incompatible with Europe's capacity to act in a world of geopolitical competition, war and growing insecurity.

🚨 German authorities have attributed the attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport to Russia.

The incident is another warning that Russia’s hybrid warfare is increasingly targeting Europe itself — including the critical infrastructure supporting Ukraine.

UEF has consistently called for Europe to strengthen its common defence, integrate air and counter-drone capabilities, protect critical infrastructure, and develop a genuine European intelligence and security capacity.

National responses alone are no longer enough.

Europe needs a common strategy, common capabilities and the political institutions capable of defending European citizens and supporting Ukraine.

A genuine European Defence Union, under democratic control, must become a pillar of a sovereign Federal Europe.

When one of us is attacked, Europe must be able to defend itself. 🇪🇺

🚨 BREAKING: 11 EU countries are calling for limits on the use of “obstructive” vetoes in EU foreign policy.

Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Romania, Spain and Sweden have put forward a joint proposal aimed at reducing the use of national vetoes in the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy.

The proposal does not seek to abolish the veto or amend the EU Treaties.

Instead, it calls for:
• greater use of constructive abstention;
• avoiding the blockage of foreign-policy decisions over unrelated national issues;
• fuller use of qualified-majority voting where the Treaties already allow it;
• clearer justification when a government invokes vital national interests to oppose a decision.

The initiative argues that the necessary legal framework is already in place.

It is a step forward in the right direction: a coalition of willing Member States seeking to make European foreign policy more effective within the current Treaties.

The broader challenge remains open: moving from managing national vetoes to eventually overcoming them.

On 31 August, we commemorate the birth of Altiero Spinelli, co-founder of the UEF and one of the leading architects of European unity.

His message remains as relevant as ever: Europe must be built through courage, political action and the determination of those who believe in a shared future.

Today, we honour his legacy by continuing his struggle for a sovereign, democratic and federal Europe.

Today in Ventotene, the Second General Assembly of the Action Committee for the United States of Europe approved and signed the Ventotene Declaration: “It is Time to Build the United States of Europe.”

The message is clear: Europe can no longer afford institutional paralysis.

The Declaration calls for a European Union capable of acting as a sovereign political power in a world marked by war, geopolitical competition, economic insecurity and the climate crisis. It calls for:

- overcoming unanimity and strengthening European decision-making;
- building a European Common Defence and a single foreign policy;
- giving the EU the fiscal capacity and own resources needed to act;
- strengthening the democratic powers of the European Parliament;
- launching Treaty reform and making enlargement and institutional reform advance together;
- allowing willing Member States to move ahead through deeper integration when progress at 27 is blocked;
- mobilising citizens and democratic forces ahead of the crucial political choices Europe will face in the coming years.

The choice before us is increasingly stark: either Europeans share sovereignty and gain the power to shape their future, or Europe risks becoming a spectator in a world shaped by others.

From Ventotene, once again, comes a call to turn crisis into opportunity and take the next step towards European Federation.

It is time to act. It is time to build the United States of Europe.

Yesterday, 52.8% of Icelanders voted against resuming accession negotiations with the European Union, while 47.2% voted in favour. The result was close — but its political message should not be ignored.

Europe cannot simply ask others to join. It must make itself worth joining.

As the Action Committee for the United States of Europe declared today, enlargement and institutional reform must go hand in hand. A Union unable to overcome paralysis, act decisively and exercise sovereignty where Europeans need it most will struggle not only to protect its citizens, but also to inspire those outside it.

The answer is not less Europe, but a stronger, more democratic and more sovereign Europe: capable of acting on security, defence, foreign policy, the economy and the great challenges of our time.

It’s time for a federal Europe: stronger, more credible, more attractive.

Participants will discuss current political developments, the challenges facing European democracy and the priorities for advancing the political unification of Europe.

The meeting will culminate in the discussion, adoption and signing of the Ventotene Declaration.

On 29 August 2026, Icelanders will vote on whether to resume EU accession talks, which were suspended in 2013. The vote comes amid growing economic and geopolitical uncertainty—and a renewed debate over whether Iceland should continue to follow many EU rules without having a seat at the table.

This is not yet a vote on EU membership: if negotiations lead to an agreement, Icelanders will have the final say in a second referendum.

But the question extends far beyond Iceland. The European Union is not yet ready for further enlargement. If it wants to welcome new members while remaining effective, democratic and capable of acting, it must begin reforming itself—and it must do so now.

Iceland is looking towards the EU. Is the EU ready to look towards its own future?
