A new national scientific exploration program on natural hydrogen is now funded and the Geological Survey of Belgium will start to determine the most promising areas, understand the mechanisms explaining the hydrogen formation and collect new data on the field.

⚡Hydrogène naturel : la Belgique finance une nouvelle frontière scientifique !

Bonne nouvelle, le gouvernement a approuvé le financement du programme national scientifique d’exploration de l’hydrogène naturel, une ressource potentiellement propre et locale.

Les chercheurs du Service Géologique de Belgique de l’Institut des Sciences naturelles, vont :
📍 identifier les zones les plus prometteuses
🧪 étudier les mécanismes naturels de formation de l’H₂
⛏️ collecter de nouvelles données sur le terrain

Une démarche ambitieuse pour comprendre ce que notre géologie peut offrir pour l’avenir énergétique du pays.

⚡ België lanceert een nationaal onderzoeksprogramma naar natuurlijke waterstof!

Goed nieuws: de overheid heeft de financiering goedgekeurd voor het nationale wetenschappelijke programma voor de exploratie van natuurlijke waterstof, een potentieel schone en lokale energiebron.

De onderzoekers van de Belgische Geologische Dienst van het Instituut voor Natuurwetenschappen zullen:

📍 de meest veelbelovende zones identificeren
🧪 de natuurlijke vormingsmechanismen van H₂ onderzoeken
⛏️ nieuwe gegevens op het terrein verzamelen

Een ambitieus initiatief om te begrijpen wat onze geologie kan betekenen voor de toekomstige energievoorziening van het land.

In memoriam Dr. Piet Laga, Hoofdgeoloog- Directeur bij de Belgische Geologische Dienst

Kortrijk, 6.6.1941 – Leuven, 21.12.2025

Piet Laga trad in 1971 in dienst bij de Belgische Geologische Dienst en bleef er werkzaam tot aan zijn pensionering in 2006, toen hij de functie van hoofdgeoloog-directeur bekleedde. Zijn expertise lag in de Paleogeen–Neogeen stratigrafie en de hydrogeologie. Vanuit die kennis raakte hij nauw betrokken bij toegepaste geologische projecten in de tabulaire afzettingen van Noord-België.

Piet zal ook herinnerd worden als de architect van de interne organisatie van de Geologische Dienst en voor zijn bijdragen aan de overdracht ervan van het Ministerie van Economische Zaken naar het Koninklijk Belgisch Instituut voor Natuurwetenschappen, BELSPO. Zijn oud-collega’s bij de BGD zullen zijn deskundigheid en toewijding blijvend herdenken.
Voor Piet waren Geologische Dienst en dienstverlening onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden.

In memoriam Dr. Piet Laga, Géologue en chef- Directeur au Service géologique de Belgique

Kortrijk, 6.6.1941 – Louvain, 21.12.2025

Piet Laga est entré au Service géologique de Belgique en 1971 et y est resté en fonction jusqu’à sa mise à la retraite en 2006, année où il occupait le poste de géologue en chef-directeur. Son domaine d’expertise était la stratigraphie du Paléogène–Néogène et l’hydrogéologie. Sur cette base, il a été étroitement impliqué dans des projets de géologie appliquée portant sur les formations tabulaires du nord de la Belgique.

Piet sera également rappelé comme l’architecte de l’organisation interne du Service géologique et pour ses contributions au transfert de celui-ci du Ministère des Affaires économiques vers l’Institut royal des Sciences naturelles de Belgique, BELSPO. Ses anciens collègues au Service géologique se souviendront durablement de son expertise et de son dévouement.
Pour Piet, le Service géologique et la mission de service public étaient indissociables.

Ongoing work in the framework of the bilateral collaboration project GEO2KA (funded by a Belgium-Vietnam Research Cooperation Research Call through Belspo) between Vietnam (D**g Van Karst Plateau Geopark) and Belgium (Famenne-Ardenne Geopark). Here below some outreach-communication activities with the students in a school located in Marche-en-Famenne on geohazards aspects.

📣 An afternoon dedicated to the slate mine of Martelange, conferences on the geological mapping campaigns in the Eisleck area, hydrogeological project and radon measurements followed by a visit of the surface facilities and underground exploitations were organised by the AGL.
