🇬🇷🇪🇺 Greece at the forefront of efforts for a strong and competitive European shipping sector ⚓

📍 In Limassol, Greece’s Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Vassilis Kikilias, joined his counterparts from 🇨🇾 Cyprus, 🇲🇹 Malta and 🇮🇹 Italy in signing a Joint Declaration on the Protection of European shipping.

🤝 Four major Mediterranean maritime nations, representing a significant share of European and global shipping, are joining forces to coordinate their positions in the 🇪🇺 European Union and at the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

🎯 The objective is clear: safe seas and a strong, modern and competitive European shipping sector, advancing the green transition while safeguarding the affordability of maritime transport.

Minister Kikilias stressed the direct link between the competitiveness of European shipping and citizens’ everyday lives: when maritime transport costs rise, the impact is felt across the economy — from consumer goods and food to energy and fuel.

🗳️ 🇬🇷 On International Day of Democracy, Greece proudly celebrates a universal value that was born in ancient Athens more than 2,500 years ago.

🏛️ Democracy comes from the Greek words demos (the people) and kratos (power) — power of the people.

📝 The reforms of Cleisthenes in 508/507 BC laid the foundations of Athenian democracy and established a groundbreaking principle: that citizens should have a voice in the governance of their city. In the 5th century BC, particularly under Pericles, this evolved into direct democracy, with citizens participating directly in the Assembly and deciding on key matters of the city.

🌍 From the Greek demokratia came democracy, démocratie, democracia, democrazia, Demokratie — a system of government that travelled across languages and borders, carrying with it an idea that would profoundly shape societies and political institutions around the world.

🇬🇷 As the birthplace of democracy, Greece honours this unique legacy by reaffirming its enduring commitment to protecting and strengthening democratic values and institutions.

🤝🇪🇺 Democracy is our shared European heritage — and our shared responsibility!

🏛️🇬🇷 “City of the Europeans” – Ancient Europos 🇪🇺✨

More than 2,000 years ago, in the heart of the ancient Macedonian Kingdom, stood the important city of Europos.

📜 A 2nd-century BC inscription refers to it as “The City of the Europeans” (Ευρωπαίων Πόλις) — its inhabitants were called Europeans!

🌍 The name Europe has deep roots in the ancient Greek world, beginning with Europa of Greek mythology and later becoming the name of our continent. While Europe was not named after the city of Europos, the connection reminds us just how ancient the name and identity are.

🏛️ From ancient Europos to modern Europe — a name echoing across more than two millennia. 🇬🇷 ➡️ 🇪🇺

🇬🇷🇪🇺 Bringing the EU closer to citizens: Greece’s Recovery and Resilience Plan delivering on the ground

European funding is not only about figures and absorption rates. It is about turning common EU priorities into tangible projects that improve citizens’ daily lives.

🏛️ At an event organised by the Ministry of Environment and Energy at the 90th Thessaloniki International Fair, the impact of Greece’s Recovery and Resilience Plan was put into focus. The Ministry manages projects and actions representing almost 32% of the Plan’s €18.2 billion budget.

From energy-efficient homes and businesses🏠, electricity grids, interconnections and energy storage, to 💧 water management, ♻️ waste management, 🌳 forest protection, 🌍 climate resilience and 🏙️ sustainable urban planning, the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility is translating European solidarity and common objectives into concrete results across Greece.

🇪🇺 As European Commission DG REFORM Director-General Declan Costello highlighted, European funding is being translated into projects that “improve citizens’ lives and strengthen Greece’s future”, underlining the close partnership between Greece and the European Commission. 🇬🇷🤝🇪🇺

🇬🇷🇪🇺 Strengthening Greek livestock farming

Greece remains firmly committed to supporting livestock farmers affected by animal disease outbreaks.

Greece’s response combines three priorities: containing and eradicating animal diseases, providing effective support to affected farmers, and preparing for the recovery and renewal of livestock farming as soon as sanitary conditions allow.

At the same time, Greece is preparing a comprehensive recovery plan for livestock farming, with modern and safer farms, stronger biosecurity, reinforced veterinary services and a permanent framework for disease prevention and preparedness.

Speaking at the 4th session of Greece’s National Dialogue on the future Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in Thessaloniki, Minister of Rural Development and Food Margaritis Schinas stressed: “As long as the crisis continues, support will continue. And when the time comes to rebuild, we will already be ready.”
