🔬 New from the CBE JU-funded project highlights the potential of polyethylene furanoate (PEF) to reduce the environmental footprint of plastic packaging.

A new peer-reviewed life cycle assessment evaluates Avantium’s plant-based polymer PEF, branded as releaf®, across its full life cycle, from production to end-of-life, including recycling.

The study shows that PEF can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 71% at resin level and up to 88% in 500 mL beverage bottle applications, compared to conventional PET under representative European conditions.

The findings also underline that renewable carbon and recycling are complementary approaches: recycling reduces demand for virgin material, while renewable carbon helps reduce the impact of the material itself.

🌍 On World Environment Day, we think about what's on our plate.

Europe sources 55–60% of its protein from meat, while sustainable alternatives make up less than 1% of the market. Closing this gap is one of the important steps we can take to reduce our environmental footprint.

This is where fungi come in. 🍄 CBE JU-funded projects are proving that , a nutrient-rich, low-impact protein produced through fermenting fungi, can be a solution to this challenge. How are they doing this?

➡️ The recently concluded Plenitude Project built a first-of-its-kind mycoprotein biorefinery in the Netherlands. The project’s coordinator ENOUGH now operates the world's largest mycoprotein facility, with research confirming over 90% lower carbon emissions and land use compared to meat production.

➡️ MycoStruct project, one of CBE JU's newest funded projects, takes the next step and will produce fungi-based whole-cut formats that replicate the texture of meat, using agricultural side streams as feedstock, with 93% lower GHG emissions than beef. 🌱

These are just a few examples of how the bioeconomy can reshape how Europe produces protein.

🌱 What does a nature-positive economy look like in practice?

Today at 2026, CBE JU is showcasing concrete examples of circular innovation, from food packaging made with grass fibres and insulation boards from wetland biomass to hemp-based automotive parts and bio-based surfactants.

Visitors can discover how CBE JU-funded projects are turning renewable resources and side streams into practical solutions for everyday life.

These examples show how the circular can support a more competitive, resilient and sustainable Europe while creating new value from biological resources.

Pass by the CBE JU stand to meet us and explore the solutions developed by WoodCell Project, Rural BioReFarmeries, FIBSUN and Surfs-Up project.

🏭 Scaling up innovation requires strong connections between technologies, markets and investment.

On 10-11 June 2026, Bio Innovations Europe will take place in The Hague, bringing together bio-based innovators, chemical and materials producers, consumer brands, investors, technology providers and other stakeholders from across the .

This satellite event will focus on generating concrete commercial partnerships and investment opportunities to support the transition from innovation to industrial deployment.

As Europe works to strengthen its industrial competitiveness and sustainability, such platforms can help connect bio-based solutions with market needs and accelerate their uptake at scale.

The event contributes to broader efforts to advance Europe’s bioeconomy and support the deployment of sustainable, bio-based technologies.

🌊 What if could become a common ingredient in the food we eat every day?

CBE JU-funded CleanAlgae2Value is working to make that possible by tackling the main barriers holding microalgae back: taste, texture and functionality. The project extracts a range of ingredients from white microalgae, including protein isolates, oils, natural pigments and starch.

By reducing production costs and assessing the environmental and societal benefits, CleanAlgae2Value shows how microalgae can play a bigger role in Europe's food system.

🌱How can innovation help regions invest in nature and scale up sustainable solutions?

On 5 June, the CBE JU-funded BIO-INSPIRE project will host the webinar 'Scaling up bioeconomy innovation in Southeastern Europe – Teaming & Knowledge Exchange Open Call', an official partner event of .

The webinar will present BIO-INSPIRE’s teaming and knowledge exchange open call, which offers cascade funding, study visits and collaboration opportunities to strengthen regional bioeconomy ecosystems in widening countries across Eastern and Southeastern Europe.

📘 Participants will learn more about how knowledge exchange and cross-regional cooperation can support innovation in areas such as agriculture and forestry, biowaste valorisation, products, digital tools and policy frameworks.

By helping regional stakeholders mobilise local bio-based resources and turn nature-derived solutions into practical applications, BIO-INSPIRE supports circular and regenerative bioeconomy practices that reduce environmental impact and create new opportunities for sustainable regional development.
