European External Action Service - EEAS

European External Action Service - EEAS 🇪🇺🌍 The European Union's diplomatic service. Promoting peace, security, and EU values around the world.

The role of the EEAS is to coordinate the European Union's (EU) foreign and security policies. Its purpose is to bring greater coherence, consistency and coordination to the foreign and security polices of the EU. This will enable Europe and its 500 million citizens to speak with a stronger voice in world affairs and promote European values like democracy, human rights, peace building, good govern

ance and multilateralism. The Head of the External Action Service is Kaja Kallas, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, who is also Vice-President of the European Commission. Ensuring the consistency and coordination of the EU’s policies towards the rest of the world is the key task of this post. The High Representative can propose and implement policy although the actual making of EU foreign policy is the responsibility of the monthly meeting of EU Foreign Ministers – the Foreign Affairs Council - which is chaired by Kaja Kallasl. The EEAS supports the work of the High Representative, as well as that of the President of the Council, and President of the European Commission, when they deal with International issues. The EEAS has its Headquarters in Brussels and is responsible for running 144 EU Delegations and Offices around the world which represent the EU and its citizens worldwide. Maintaining political dialogue, administering development aid, overseeing EU trade issues and building cultural contacts, are just some of the tasks undertaken by EU Delegations whose staff comes from a number of different departments of the External Action Service and the European Commission. The creation of the EEAS is one of the most significant changes introduced by the Treaty of Lisbon which entered into force on 1 December 2009. The EEAS was created by the merger of the external relations departments of the European Commission and the Council and by some diplomatic staff from the EU’s Member States.

Today, the EU adopted a new strategic framework on humanitarian action. From Sudan to Gaza, from Ukraine to the Sahel, access to aid is shrinking, and humanitarian workers are increasingly at risk.

"In a global humanitarian system facing cuts and shortfalls, the EU and its Member States remain the world's largest and most reliable donors. With our new approach to humanitarian diplomacy, we will make better use of every tool at our disposal to safeguard aid delivery, secure humanitarian access, protect civilians, and ensure respect for international humanitarian law. It will also help ensure that humanitarian issues are front and centre in our external action." Kaja Kallas, HR/VP

The new Communication sets out how the EU will use its full diplomatic and political weight to protect humanitarian space and uphold international humanitarian law.

Trust is not built in one day. It is built through transparency, accountability and showing up for the long term.

That is why the EU works with partners across more than 75 countries to support credible, inclusive processes worldwide. Not a gesture. A long-term commitment.

Reliable. And that’s the whole point.

Equality, participation and non-discrimination are at the heart of democracy. Yet across the world, too many LGBTIQ+ persons still face violence, discrimination, hate speech and stigmatisation simply for being who they are. In more than 65 countries, consensual same-sex relations remain criminalised. Where discrimination persists, democracy cannot fully thrive. The EU remains committed to defending the human rights of all LGBTIQ+ persons and to promoting inclusive and democratic societies for all.
