Europe’s startup and scaleup ecosystem is on the rise: EU-27 performance is up 13.5 percentage points since 2020, according to the first-ever the Startup & Scaleup Scoreboard. But the numbers are not all positive: we’re still behind the US (€3,767 billion vs. our €748 billion) and China (€1,259 billion) in ecosystem valuation and unicorns’ growth (355 in the EU vs. 1,770 in the US).

Eight countries - Estonia, Sweden, Finland, Netherlands, Denmark, Luxembourg, Ireland and France - are leading and are showing us how bold policies translate into thriving ecosystems.

The Scoreboard results and analysis will help shape strategic actions, including the upcoming European Innovation Act, to support more pre-commercial procurement and boost early demand to innovative products and services.

One year after we launched the EU Startup and Scaleup Strategy, something is clear: turning progress into global leadership will require far bolder action.

🌱⛽ The CERESiS project shows how specially selected plants can grow on contaminated land, absorb pollutants, and later be turned into clean biofuels – offering a double benefit for the environment and farmers.

Over time, repeated harvests help decontaminate soil while producing renewable energy, supporting both cleaner land and a decarbonised economy. Watch the video to learn more.

🩺 Type 1 diabetes has no cure – but that could change.

The Vanguard: Bioartificial Pancreas to Cure Type 1 Diabetes project has developed a retrievable, living implant that works like a bioartificial pancreas – aiming to restore the body’s natural ability to regulate blood sugar without relying on donor organs or lifelong immunosuppression.

Using innovative biomaterials and insulin-producing cell clusters, including scalable approaches based on porcine cells, the system has shown strong results in preclinical studies and opens new possibilities for regenerative medicine.

Beyond diabetes, the technologies developed could support broader advances in cell therapy and tissue engineering.
