We were delighted to welcome the University of Bristol's Dr Mark Allinson, Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching), and Stuart Johnson, Director of Careers and Skills, to Belgium this week.

Their programme included very fruitful meetings with fellow Coimbra Group of Universities members the Université catholique de Louvain and KU Leuven, as well as the VUB - Vrije Universiteit Brussel and ULB - Université libre de Bruxelles via the Universities Informal Liaison Offices Network (UnILiON).

Informative discussions were had with all on a wide range of topics including the latest pedagogical approaches, and assessment enhancement, student and support, and employability, and international cooperation, and .

The B&BBO was delighted to take part in the University of Bristol’s recent celebration of the UK’s association to Horizon Europe, which started on 1 January!

At an event hosted by the Research Development International team and attended by academics from across the University, we presented some of the ways in which the Bristol & Bath Brussels Office can help Bristol’s researchers make the most of the opportunities that association will bring.

We look forward to continuing to work with colleagues and partners to support their collaboration and participation in the world’s largest R&I funding programme.

Congratulations to 2 University of Bristol academics, who were recently awarded -funded European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grants to continue their pioneering research!

Prof Abigail Fraser and Dr Krishna C. Balram received the prestigious awards to pursue their groundbreaking into placenta health and acoustic waves respectively.

The Bristol pair were 2 of the 308 researchers selected for this year’s , which aim to support excellent scientists and scholars to pursue their most promising scientific ideas.

The B&BBO was pleased to co-organise 2 recent meetings.

The 1st focused on Europe-Africa HEI collaboration and featured presentations by UnILiON members including the University of Bristol, which introduced the for transformative research collaborations.

The 2nd focused on in R&I and included an update from the European Commission's DG RTD on its toolkit, published in 2022, and related activities since to boost research security in Europe.

The University of Bristol has been chosen by the UK Government to host a new supercomputer research facility, focused on artificial intelligence (AI).

Known as Isambard-AI, it will be among the most powerful in the world when it opens at the National Composites Centre (NCC) next year.

The resource will be available to experts to harness the power of AI in areas such as , , and research.

Isambard-AI’s next-generation capabilities are expected to put and region on the global map for AI and high-performance computing.

Congratulations to Amy Penfield from B&BBO partner the University of Bristol, who has been awarded around €1.6m by the European Research Council (ERC) to support her cutting-edge research!

Dr Penfield is a Senior Lecturer in and and received the prestigious ERC Starting Grant to develop a comparative study of what she terms ‘incursion economies’.

She will use the grant to investigate clandestine economic activities, such as gold mining, illegal logging, and land-grabbing, that give rise to disastrous environmental consequences in the 👇
