European Parliament Translation Service Welcome to the page of the European Parliament’s Translation Service! Make sure to follow us to keep up with our work, projects, events, and much more!

The translation service (Directorate-General for Translation and Clear Language - DG TRAD) of the European Parliament produces translations of written documents in all 24 EU languages, enabling communication with its citizens in their mother tongue. Our vision is about building bridges between different languages and cultures and promoting sustainable multilingualism as an essential component of t

he European democratic ideal. We are an efficient and modern service providing high-quality translations of legislation in all EU languages. By directly enabling Parliament to pursue its policy of multilingualism, we play an integral role in protecting the cultural and linguistic diversity of the Union and in facilitating transparency, understanding and the exchange of views.

Looking back at this week’s TRANS2026 conference🔍

Once again, this year, the European Parliament’s translation service was pleased to co-organise and join in Maribor, Slovenia, the TRANS International Summer Academy and Conference in Translation Studies — a now well-established annual appointment for us. This 13th edition was dedicated to a most timely topic: ‘Artificial Intelligence for Language Professionals’. 🤖 💬

AI is changing the way we use and learn languages, bringing both exciting opportunities and important challenges.

In his opening speech and in his talk ‘Why language professionals matter in the age of AI’, our Director-General Valter Mavrič, highlighted the need to explore how AI can make our work more efficient and improve quality, while keeping human expertise at the centre. The future of translation should not be a competition between language professionals and machines, but an opportunity for the two to harness their combined strengths. 🤝

Our translation service also contributed to the programme with a presentation by Marta Kakol, Head of our Enlargement and Third-Country Languages Unit and with hands-on workshops for students delivered by our managers and translators.

Take a look at some photos from the conference — a week filled with inspiring opportunities to lean and exchange. Thank you to everyone involved!

Clear Language Tip – Advocate for your reader 🤝

How many times have you had to read a sentence again and again to really understand what it is trying to say?

Sometimes the important information is lost in long sentences and words that might puzzle your readers. When writing to an audience, try to consider how you would want a topic to be introduced to you, if you were completely unfamiliar with it.

This month’s clear language tip illustrates how more words is not always clearer – in English, Italian, and Estonian.

Have you run into unnecessarily complex sentences? How would you re-write them?

Let us know in the comments. ✍️

The EU has 24 official languages and the European Parliament communicates with its citizens in all of them. Our language professionals make that possible with their impressive repertoires of different languages.
