The translation service (Directorate-General for Translation and Clear Language - DG TRAD) of the European Parliament produces translations of written documents in all 24 EU languages, enabling communication with its citizens in their mother tongue. Our vision is about building bridges between different languages and cultures and promoting sustainable multilingualism as an essential component of t

he European democratic ideal. We are an efficient and modern service providing high-quality translations of legislation in all EU languages. By directly enabling Parliament to pursue its policy of multilingualism, we play an integral role in protecting the cultural and linguistic diversity of the Union and in facilitating transparency, understanding and the exchange of views.

Clear Language Tip – use terms your audience knows 📌

Keeping your audience in mind is the key to clear writing.

While you might use some terms regularly in a professional context, not everyone does. So, when writing for other people, put yourself in their shoes!

Here are examples on how using a more common term can make the message clearer in English, Bulgarian, and Lithuanian, brought by our language professionals. 💡

On Tuesday 2 June, nearly 200 EU trainees took part in the fifth edition of the speed networking event organised by the Excellence Hubs of the EU institutions in — this time hosted at the European Parliament.

The event brought together staff from Luxembourg-based EU institutions and bodies across five Excellence Hubs: Legal, Finance, Digital, Multilingualism, and Data, Information & Knowledge Management. Trainees had the opportunity to learn more about the diverse career paths and expertise represented within each Hub.

Our colleagues proudly represented the European Parliament’s service, sharing insights into their work and engaging with trainees’ questions throughout the event.

A valuable opportunity to connect, exchange ideas, and discover the many professional opportunities Luxembourg has to offer. ✨

International experts met in Strasbourg to advance language and terminology standards 💬📝

From 25 to 29 May 2026, the translation and interpretation services of the European Parliament, in cooperation with Groupe AFNOR, the French Standardization Association, had the pleasure of hosting the annual meetings of the Technical Committee on Language and Terminology of ISO at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

It was a highly productive week, with experts and working groups making significant progress on international standards in terminology, plain language, translation, interpreting, and language-related technologies. ⚙️🤝

Beyond the working sessions, the week offered more opportunities for meaningful exchanges among participants. A short boat trip on the Ill river and a reception hosted by the City of Strasbourg provided memorable occasions to continue conversations, build new connections, and strengthen the international network that supports the development of global standards.

Welcoming experts from around the world to Strasbourg, city where multilingualism is part of everyday life, felt especially meaningful. Few places better illustrate the importance of the Committee’s mission: developing global standards that support clear communication across languages, cultures, and borders.

A sincere thank you to all participants and colleagues whose commitment, expertise, and collaboration made this successful week possible.

Sometimes a word has a broad meaning that does not map neatly onto one single word in a target language. Instead, depending on the context, alternative words are used to convey a similar meaning.

In today’s , we explore how translation looks like when one term can have multiple interpretations across languages. 🤔

A common hurdle when translating into is the English word ‘enforcement’. With no direct equivalent for this word in Portuguese, our language professionals use words like ‘execução’, ‘aplicação’, or ‘garantir a aplicação/execução’, depending on whether the intended meaning is implementation, application of rules or monitoring compliance. The Portuguese translation is therefore chosen according to context to reflect the specific nuance of the original.

As always in translation, understanding the context is key.
