SOME HISTORICAL REMARKS ON SANDWIP :
1. We found it (Sandwip) a place inhabited and to my judgement, the fertilest island in the world.- (1565). Caesar Frederick-History of Bakergune. P. 35.
2. Three hundred ships are yearly loaded from hence (Sandwip) with salt.- Purchas, P.315.
3. In the five years ending in 1776 over 1,30,000 maunds of salt were produced annually in the lands of Purganah Sanwdwip.- Dist. Gazetteers. P. 68.
4. The Venetian traveller Caesar Frederick says (1565) such was the abundance materials for ship-building in this part of the country that Sultan of Constantinople found it cheaper to have his vessels built here (Sandwip) than at Alexandria.- Hunter. P. 248
5. Mr Walter found many weavers in Bamni and Sandwip an cotton was then grown in the islands.- Dist Gazetteers. P. 71.
6. The island of Sandwip is very near to Bengal being only 6 leagues (18miles) from the part of Sripure. (Translation of Du Jarrick, Chap. ###II).
7. It (Sandwip) is opposition to Sripure. – History of Bakergunge. P. 35.
8. He had this inscription upon his colours- “Fathe Khan by grace of God, Lord of Sandwip, of Portuguese nation.” The Portuguese Asia.
9. Although the Island of Sandwip does not belong to Bakergunge, yet its history is, in some measure, mixed up with that of Bakla.- History of Bakergunge—H. Beveridge. P. 34.
10. Caeser Frederick, the Venetian traveller in 1565 described the inhabitants of Sandwip as Moors- “ Statistical of Bengal”-Hunter P. 240.
11. It may be noted, in Sandwip and apparently near Noakhali also, there were then living large number of ex-soldiers or descendants of ex-soldiers of the Mughal armies pensioned off with grant of land.- Noakhali District Gazetteers, P. 90.
12. The only place of historical interest in the district (Noakhali) are the mosques on Sandwip.- Wiliam Hunter.
