বিশ্বাস করুন বা নাই করুন, এটাই দেশের ঐতিহ্যবাহী সুরমা নদীর বর্তমান অবস্থা। নদীটি এখন সিলেটের সবচেয়ে বড় ময়লার বাগাড়ে পরিণত হয়েছে। নদী তীরবর্তী বাসিন্দা ও ব্যবসা প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলো প্রতিনিয়ত ময়লা ফেলে সুরমার পানি ব্যবহারের অযোগ্য করে তুলছে। এ ছাড়াও, পলিথিন-ককশিট ফেলে নদীর তলদেশ ভরাট হয়ে নৌযান চলাচলও বন্ধ হওয়ার উপক্রম। পরিবর্তন হয়ে পড়েছে পানির নিজস্ব রং। ছবিটি নগরের কাজীর বাজার এলাকা থেকে তোলা হয়েছে।
