One of our running projects is the Ultra Violet-C Irradiation Based Disinfection System, which aims to establish hygienic menstrual health as a fundamental right for a significant number of the female population in Bangladesh. This initiative is submitted for "The IHS Alumni Impact Award-2022" competition. It is now open for public voting. The theme for was Groundwater. When Rainwater is the most environment-friendly water source, it is undoubtedly a sustainable alternative to Groundwater.
WatCities aspires to accommodate rainwater harvesting systems in urban areas to reduce the impact on Groundwater. By incorporating rainwater catchments in multistoried buildings, we can also use them for various purposes at the household level.

A regular working scene from the Sunderban Hygiene Center at Shatkhira district shows how the female operators are using our (UV-C) irradiation-based disinfection system to disinfect the biodegradable sanitary napkins. Unlike the regular-mass-produced sanitary napkins, these are locally produced and environmentally friendly, as these are bio-degradable. Many low-income Bangladeshi communities now use these alternative low-cost sanitary napkins to maintain healthy menstrual sanitation and lifestyle. However, being locally manufactured, these napkins require disinfection to eliminate contaminations exactly before being packaged and sold.

We, therefore, being committed, social entrepreneurs have provided the Ultra Violet C (UV-C) irradiation-based disinfection system to some of the leading NGOs of Bangladesh, which are actively working in this sector. NGOs such as Shushilan, MMS, SDI, United Purpose are already our clients, using the system for disinfecting locally made sanitary napkins to improve access to healthy menstrual sanitation in low-cost communities in Bangladesh. The Ultra Violet C (UV-C) irradiation-based disinfection system runs by electricity and consumes low electrical energy (wattage rating of lamp 12- 30 watt).

​​সাতক্ষীরা জেলার সুন্দরবন হাইজিন সেন্টার(Sunderban Hygiene Center) এর প্রতিদিন এর কার্যাবলির একটি হচ্ছে সেখানকার নারী কর্মীরা আমাদের (UV-C) Irradiation ভিত্তিক জীবানুনাশক পদ্ধতি ব্যবহার করে পরিবেশবান্ধব সেনেটারি ন্যাপকিন জীবাণুমুক্তকরণ। স্থানীয়ভাবে উৎপাদিত এই সেনেটারি ন্যাপকিন গুলো পরিবেশবান্ধব কারণ এগুলো সহজেই পঁচে মাটির সাথে মিশে যায়। আজকাল অনেক স্বল্প উপার্জনের বাংলাদেশী জনসাধারণ স্বাস্থ্যকর জীবনমান বজায় রাখতে এই স্বল্প খরচে উৎপাদিত সেনেটারি ন্যাপকিন ব্যবহার করছে। যেহেতু এই ন্যাপকিনগুলো স্থানীয়ভাবে উৎপাদিত হয়, তাই প্যাকেটজাত করে বিক্রি করার ঠিক আগমুহূর্তে এগুলোকে জীবানুমুক্ত করা প্রয়োজনীয়।

বাংলাদেশী সামাজিক উদ্যোক্তা হিসেবে আমরা এই আল্ট্রা ভায়োলেট (UV-C) Irradiation ভিত্তিক জীবানুনাশক পদ্ধতি সরবরাহ করেছি এমন কিছু এনজিও কে যারা সরাসরি এই সেক্টর এ কাজ করে যাচ্ছেন। বিভিন্ন প্রগতিশীল এনজিও সংস্থা যেমন সুশীলন(Sushilan), এমএমএস(MMS), এসডি আই(SDI), ইউনাইটেড পার্পোস( United Purpose) ইতঃমধ্যে আমাদের সরবরাহ করা এই পদ্ধতি ব্যবহার করছেন স্থানীয়ভাবে উৎপাদিত স্যানিটারী ন্যাপকিন জীবানুমুক্ত করতে এবং স্বল্প আয়ের জনসাধারণের মাঝে উন্নত এবং স্বাস্থ্যকর জীবনযাপন পরিচালনার উদ্দ্যেশ্যে।

আল্ট্রা ভায়োলেট (UV-C) Irradiationভিত্তিক জীবানুনাশক পদ্ধতিটি বৈদ্যুতিক শক্তি দ্বারা পরিচালিত হয় এবং এটি স্বল্প মাত্রার বৈদ্যুতিক শক্তি ব্যবহার করে ( ১২-৩০ ওয়াট একটি ল্যাম্পের ওয়াটেজ রেটিং)।

To work for the 'Right Cause' has always been the mantra for WatCities. Amidst the severe constraints, WatCtities always felt accountable as a social enterprise to help support the nation. WatCtities believes, by bringing a set of micro-changes, it is possible to bring sustainable Bangladesh! We the team of WatCities, do see the problems as opportunities to resolve with our affordable solutions.

It is a great honor for Watcities to be awarded as 1st runner up (in the category of other relevant solutions) in the grand finale of ACT COVID-19 season-1 by the ICT Division of the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. This competition is a national platform to collect ideas and business solutions from young entrepreneurs, social businesses, and innovators to address the challenges endued from COVID-19. Among, more than 1800 participants, 36 participants were awarded in 6 different categories, where WatCities has made a position to be the 1st runner up, among all of the brilliant innovators.

The ceremony was led by the Honorable State Minister, ICT Division, Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications & Information Technology Division of Bangladesh, Mr. Zunaid Ahmed Palak. Our proposed intervention was about disinfection of protective equipment like Face shield, Safety Eye Wear, Mask, PPE and medical equipment like blood pressure monitor, pulse oximeter, blood glucose monitor and also some daily use items like cell phone, laptop, remote control, specs, drinking glass, cutleries, hot water bag, etc with UV-C germicidal irradiation.
