European Union in Bangladesh

The EU Delegation participated on 20th August as a panellist in the National Consultation Workshop on the proposed National Task Force on Displacement (NTFoD), organised by Caritas Bangladesh and the Department of Disaster Management.

Climate-induced displacement is not only a humanitarian concern—it is also a development and climate-resilience challenge. A permanent, government-led coordination mechanism can help bring together relevant institutions and partners around shared priorities, stronger evidence and more coherent action.

The EU supports nationally owned approaches that can help move from fragmented interventions towards coordinated, long-term solutions—anticipating displacement risks, protecting affected communities and supporting durable solutions.

Recognising the importance of the coordinated approach, the Government of Bangladesh has agreed to formalise the process by incorporating this in the Standing Orders on Disaster (SODs).

What a pleasure to get out and about, discussing with young Bangladeshis!

Thanks to the Centre for Governance Studies, Friedrich Ebert-Stiftung and Dhaka University for organising a “Meet the Ambassador” event with the EU.

EU Ambassador Miller engaged directly with DU students, reflected on the future of EU-Bangladesh relations and shared observations from his two years in-country. Reform, transition, elections, geopolitics. 🇪🇺🇧🇩

Thanks to DCAB and Oxfam for organising a key event marking the 9th anniversary of the man-made tragedy that is the Rohingya crisis, and to Hon’ble State Minister Shama Obaed for her valuable intervention. The EU recognises the generosity of Bangladesh in hosting 1.2 million refugees. Voluntary, safe, dignified and sustainable returns need a political solution. In the meantime, we are focused on supporting host and refugee communities, promoting dignity, hope and greater self-reliance.

𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭.

Power Division of Bangladesh, Germany and the European Union Delegation 🇧🇩 🇩🇪 🇪🇺 last week launched a 𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐜𝐬 (𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐏𝐕) 𝐩𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐭 in Chuadanga. The 𝟒𝟗.𝟔 𝐤𝐖𝐩 𝐩𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐭 will generate evidence on how Bangladesh can produce clean and inexpensive energy while keeping farmland productive.

The EU, working through 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐲 and with 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞, is proud to support Bangladesh in identifying solutions that work for 𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐮𝐬𝐞.

214 Bangladeshi Erasmus Mundus scholars joined Erasmus alumni, the European Union Delegation, EU member states Ambassadors/representatives and participating countries 🇦🇹 🇧🇪 🇧🇬 🇭🇷 🇨🇾 🇨🇿 🇩🇰 🇪🇪 🇫🇮 🇫🇷 🇩🇪 🇬🇷 🇭🇺 🇮🇪 🇮🇹 🇱🇻 🇱🇺 🇲🇹 🇳🇱 🇵🇱 🇵🇹 🇷🇴 🇸🇰 🇸🇮 🇪🇸 🇸🇪 🇳🇴 🇱🇹 🇷🇸 🇹🇷 🇬🇧 for a send-off prior to their departure for studies in Europe.

Digital partnership 🇧🇩 🇪🇺 : Global Gateway in action

This week, the first ever 𝐄𝐔–𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐡 𝐑𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 brought together high-level representatives of the Government of Bangladesh, Europe and the European private sector for a substantive and forward-looking exchange on digital innovation and transformation.

The focus: delivering on our shared ambition, identifying where European and Bangladeshi expertise, experience and investment comes together around common priorities - from digital public infrastructure and connectivity to cybersecurity, interoperability and inclusive digital services.

Digital transformation is a key pillar of the EU’s 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐲 strategy, which supports secure and trusted connectivity and resilient digital ecosystems, helping strengthen the EU–Bangladesh partnership and promote an 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞.

Supporting digital transformation in Bangladesh

The European Union is helping Bangladesh develop its 𝐎𝐧𝐞-𝐈𝐃 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭, learning from the practical experience of one of our most digitally advanced member states, Estonia. From 10-13 August, Bangladeshi policymakers and experts met with their Estonian counterparts to explore the full lifecycle of identity management, from unique identification and electronic identity to data governance, interoperability, and data protection.

Under the EU-funded 𝐄-𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐞-𝐆𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 the study visit offered practical lessons on how trusted identity, secure data exchange and high-quality data can help deliver better public services, and discussed Bangladesh’s NRDEX secure data exchange and the next steps towards stronger interoperability.

Through E-ffective e-Governance, the European Union is delivering on 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 and helping Bangladesh advance its digital transformation.
