The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) is an intergovernmental regional organization comprising seven Member States lying in the littoral and adjacent areas of the Bay of Bengal - Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. The BIMSTEC Secretariat participated at a Seminar titled ‘Beyond Borders: Tourism Connectivity between South & South East Asia’ which was organised by Bangladesh Outbound Tour Operators Association (BOTOA) at Bangladesh Travel Mart 2026 (BTM 2026) in Dhaka. Director for People to People Relations, Mr. Uttam K. Shahi, highlighted the tourism potential of the BIMSTEC Region and outlined the initiatives undertaken by BIMSTEC to promote Intra-regional tourism.

The BIMSTEC Secretariat, in collaboration with the Department of Law, University of Chittagong, successfully organised an outreach programme titled “From the Shores of the Bay of Bengal: Advancing Regional Cooperation through BIMSTEC” on 3 September 2026 at the Department of Law Auditorium, University of Chittagong, Chattogram, Bangladesh.

The programme brought together students and academics to promote awareness and youth engagement in advancing regional cooperation in the Bay of Bengal region. In addition to a keynote address delivered by Ms. Sonam C. Namgyel, Director of Public Diplomacy and External Publicity, BIMSTEC Secretariat, Young Scholars Certificates were awarded to the top three write-ups submitted by students of the University of Chittagong.

The BIMSTEC Secretariat successfully conducted the 2nd Capacity Building Workshop on Project Proposal Development and Monitoring & Evaluation, held on 01–02 September 2026.

Facilitated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in collaboration with external resource persons, the two-day workshop aimed to enhance the technical and operational capacities of relevant officials in developing high-quality project proposals and establishing effective monitoring and evaluation frameworks.

A workshop on “Capacity Development for Promoting Better Understanding of Mountain Ecosystems for Deriving Economic Benefits” was successfully held from 26–27 August 2026 in Kathmandu, Nepal. The workshop brought together delegates from BIMSTEC Member States for a valuable opportunity to facilitate regional knowledge exchange on sustainable mountain economies, highlighting opportunities in eco-tourism, green enterprises, value chains, and ecosystem-based livelihoods.

Participants also made a visit to ICIMOD’s Living Mountain Lab in Godavari. The workshop was financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) with technical support from ICIMOD.

Our thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones and all those affected by this tragic disaster. The Secretariat thanks the BIMSTEC member States for providing HADR to Nepal.

"His Excellency Ambassador Indra Mani Pandey, Secretary General of BIMSTEC, brings more than three decades of diplomatic experience to BoBC 2026.

A career diplomat of India, he has served as Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva, Ambassador to Oman, Deputy Ambassador to France, and in senior roles covering disarmament, international security and regional affairs.

He will take part in BoBC 2026 in Dhaka from 3 to 5 October.

A cumulative series of webinars on "Intellectual Property Frameworks for Cross-Border Technology Transfer” are being organised by BIMSTEC Secretariat, in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The first webinar was held on 20 August 2026, with the upcoming sessions scheduled for 10 and 22 September 2026.

The series aim to focus on IP frameworks, technology transfer, sector-specific considerations and regional cooperation, with all seven BIMSTEC member States sharing their national IP and innovation environments.
