Canada is proud to fund impactful UNICEF initiatives in Bangladesh since 1972.

On September 1, 2026, High Commissioner Ajit Singh had the pleasure of meeting UNICEF’s Representative (a.i.) in Bangladesh, Gillian Mellsop, and Deputy Representative, Emmanuelle Abrioux. The discussion focused on the longstanding partnership between UNICEF and Canada in Bangladesh, ongoing collaboration, and future opportunities to work together in support of children and youth.

Canada is providing CAD $27 million to UNICEF-UNFPA’s Health System Strengthening for primary health care (HSS4PHC) project in five low-performing districts in Bangladesh, helping reduce maternal and child mortality rates and improve access to quality healthcare for women, adolescents, and children. This project is expected to reach over 3.5 million people in these districts.

Canada also continues to be one of leading donors of the UNFPA-UNICEF’s Global Program to End Child Marriage with CAD $35 million allocated until 2028, including significant support to Bangladesh.

UNICEF has also played a key role in expanding access to quality education for Rohingya and host community children in Cox's Bazar through Canada's CAD $27.5 million contribution to the Education Cannot Wait Multi-Year Resilience Programme II (2022-2025).

We look forward to continuing to our strong partnership with UNICEF, and all Bangladeshi stakeholders, in the pursuit of a better future for children and young people in all our countries.

The Canadian Commercial Corporation - Corporation commerciale canadienne (CCC), Government of Canada and বিএডিসি - Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC), Bangladesh Ministry of Agriculture signed a government-to-government contract of Canada’s world leading potash fertilizer, to be supplied between September 2026 and March 2027. Under this agreement, BADC will import a confirmed 480,000 tonnes of potash fertilizer, with an option to purchase an additional 120,000 tonnes.

Canada’s potash partnership with Bangladesh spans more than 30 years, with approximately 3.5 million tonnes of Canadian potash supplied through the government-to-government mechanism since 2014. Canadian potash is recognized globally for its high quality, consistency and reliable supply, backed by some of the world’s largest and most advanced potash reserves and production capabilities in Saskatchewan. Unlike many alternative sources, Canada offers a stable, long-term, and trusted supply through Canpotex and the government-to-government mechanism, providing greater predictability for farmers and food security.

The signing ceremony was attended by Secretary of Ministry of Agriculture, Bangladesh - কৃষি মন্ত্রণালয়, Mr. Md Salim Khan, Chairman of BADC Mr. Md Azizul Islam, and High Commissioner of Canada H.E. Ajit Singh, alongside senior officials from Canada, Bangladesh and Canpotex International Pte Ltd.

The Secretary Mr. Salim Khan highlighted the importance of ensuring a reliable supply of quality fertilizer to support Bangladesh’s farmers and agricultural production. High Commissioner Ajit Singh said: “Canada is proud to be a reliable partner in supporting Bangladesh’s farmers and food security in this time of need with the world’s best quality potash fertilizer. Today’s agreement builds on more than 30 years of cooperation on potash and opens the door to deeper collaboration between our countries across the agriculture sector.”

Canada looks forward to expanding cooperation in agricultural technology such as food processing and value addition, cold-chain and supply-chain technologies, genetics, biofertilizers, sustainable and climate-smart agriculture, research and knowledge partnership, helping strengthen productivity and resilience in Bangladesh’s agriculture sector.

The High Commission of Canada in Bangladesh, IOM Bangladesh and the Special Branch of Bangladesh Police marked an important step in strengthening border governance with the handover of the Bangla version of the Passport Examination Procedure Manual II (PEPM II).

This initiative, funded by Canada, supported the translation and distribution of 540 Bangla copies of the manual to make international best practices more accessible to frontline officers. The aim of this initiative is to strengthen their capacity to detect fraudulent travel documents and identify imposters while supporting safe and secure cross-border mobility.

A delegation from the newly formed “Invest Bangladesh”, led by Mr. Sirajul Islam Khan, Director, visited the High Commission of Canada in Bangladesh and met with High Commissioner H.E. Ajit Singh and officers from different programs to discuss opportunities to strengthen Canada Bangladesh investment and economic cooperation.

The Invest Bangladesh delegation briefed the High Commission on their mandate, its targeted assistance programs for foreign investors, and other initiatives aimed at facilitating and promoting investment in Bangladesh including their initiatives on advocacy and governance.

The discussion explored areas of collaboration, including two-way investment promotion, agriculture, aviation, defence and security, education, renewable energy, FinTech, and governance. Both sides exchanged views on opportunities to promote Canadian investment and expertise in Bangladesh, facilitate stronger business linkages, and deepen bilateral economic cooperation. A key focus was on engaging diverse stakeholders to deepen bilateral trade, including from the private sector, academia, and civil society.

The High Commission of Canada looks forward to working closely with Invest Bangladesh to support greater Canadian investment and strengthen trade and commercial ties between Canada and Bangladesh.

Nine years after the Myanmar military’s attacks forced hundreds of thousands of Rohingya to flee their homes, the crisis remains unresolved.

The High Commission of Canada in Bangladesh and the Embassy of Canada to Myanmar have issued a joint statement marking the 9th anniversary of the attacks on Rohingya.

On August 24, 2026, Canadian High Commissioner Ajit Singh met with the Bangladesh’s Honourable Minister of Finance and Planning Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury.

High Commissioner Singh commended the Minister for advancing critical governance reforms in the country, notably in the finance, commerce, and taxation sectors.

With Canada and Bangladesh’s bilateral trade having reached over $4 billion in 2025, the discussion focused on additional areas to increase bilateral trade, including agriculture, education, energy, FinTech, health, as well as security and defence. The two also discussed how longstanding people to people ties between the two countries could be leveraged as both countries seek to diversify trade through a fair rules based system.

Both agreed to continue working closely together for a better future for people in both countries.

Canada and WFP share a longstanding partnership with Canada being a top donor to WFP in support of vulnerable communities around the world, including in Bangladesh and for the Rohingya crisis response in Cox’s Bazar.
