National Institute of Local Government (former Local Government Institute) was established on 1 July, 1969 under the then East Pakistan Government Educational and Training Institutions Ordinance, 1961. The Institute is under the administrative control of the Local Government Division, Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives. The Institute is now governed by the Jatyo Sthan
iya Sarkar Institute Act, 1992. The Institute has been functioning in its own building at 29, Agargaon, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka since 1988. It comprises 5-storied administrative and hostel and 4-storied academic buildings. Two auditoriums, which accommodate about 400 participants, 4 conference rooms, 1 visitors room, 12 classrooms, and accommodation for 100 participants are available in the hostel. The Institute also has a documentation centre, a first- aid centre and a good number of modern training equipments. Such as:
