His Majesty King Haakon VIII takes the oath before the Parliament.

The oath-taking is a formal affirmation of the constitutional monarchy and of the bond between the King and the people's elected assembly.

It is a tradition with deep historical roots and marks the beginning of a new chapter for Norway.

‘A whole nation is in mourning’

‘It is with great sorrow that I received the news that His Majesty King Harald V has died.

A whole nation is in mourning and the people of Norway are left with a deep sense of gratitude for a long life in the service of Norway.

For more than three decades as monarch, Harald V demonstrated an unwavering faith in the Norwegian people. He helped us to see the best in ourselves – and in one another.

King Harald found the words to bind us together when we needed them the most. He grieved with us after the attacks 22 July 2011. He cheered with us when Norwegian athletes excelled. And he guided us, with warmth, wisdom and openness, towards a society with a place for everyone. King Harald had a profound love for Norway. And Norway had a profound love for King Harald.

My thoughts and deepest sympathy are with the Queen and the entire Royal Family at this difficult time,’ said Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre on learning of the death of King Harald V.

King Harald V was born on 21 February 1937. He died at the age of 89.

The Government will be convening soon for a government conference at the Office of the Prime Minister, and after that an extraordinary meeting of the Council of State will be held at the Royal Palace with the new King.

𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗥𝗼𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘆𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

On 24 August 2026, the Office of the Refugee Relief & Repatriation Commissioner, Cox's Bazar (RRRC) and the NRC - Norwegian Refugee Council, in collaboration with national and international stakeholders, organised a high level roundtable titled "𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘆𝗮 𝗘𝘅𝗼𝗱𝘂𝘀: 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀." Marking nine years since the mass displacement of Rohingya refugees from Myanmar in August 2017, the event reflected on past efforts and strategizing for the future. It brought together representatives from UN agencies, donor agencies, INGOs, NGOs, local representatives, Rohingya leaders, and other humanitarian actors.

Chief Guest, Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bangladesh 🇧🇩emphasized Bangladesh’s role in hosting the Rohingya refugees for nearly a decade, and called for sustained international action, diplomatic pressure to enable repatriation. Speakers mentioned the importance of sustained humanitarian funding despite growing constraints; increasing funding in several priority areas; and better coordination among implementers with efforts to strengthen local leadership in shaping and delivering assistance.

Alexander Falck-Bilden, Deputy Head of Mission 🇳🇴, mentioned in his remarks that sustained donor commitment is vital to ensure that the Rohingya crisis is not forgotten in a world of competing international crises. “𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘶𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘣𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺, 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘺 𝘴𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘣𝘦 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵, 𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘢𝘴 𝘦𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘷𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘦𝘥 𝘴𝘬𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵, 𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘨𝘯𝘪𝘻𝘦𝘥, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦”, he said.

The Norwegian 🇳🇴 government has long demonstrated a strong commitment to the refugees through extensive global humanitarian funding to organisations such as the NRC, and active participation in UN programs through core funding. Norway believes that, together, we can uphold the right of refugees to seek safety, promote their economic and social inclusion, and advocate for solutions to their displacement.
