The Inter Sector Coordination Group (ISCG) in Cox's Bazar has posted a Heat Wave Alert and Advisory note based on the heatwave forecast by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD). Key points include:
• Heat-wave alert issued by BMD from 03 April 2024.
• Follow-up warning on 13 April 2024 about heat waves in six divisions of Bangladesh.
• Highest temperature recorded in Cox’s Bazar area was 39°C, while 38°C in Ukhiya and Teknaf as of 15 April 2024.
• Temperature trend is downward, reaching 32°C by 21 April 2024.
• Heat index categories will remain at the “Danger” level according to NOAA.
• The prolonged high heat may cause fire outbreaks and aggravate illnesses, especially for those with pre-existing health conditions, undernourished children, and the elderly.
• The high temperature could also result in economic losses, negatively impacting crop production and animal mortality.
