Protect Kirtankhola, Protect our future
Barishal’s Kirtankhola River is facing relentless pollution from industrial waste, plastic and chemical garbage, threatening not only the environment but also the lives of marginalized communities who depend on it. The river’s biodiversity is rapidly declining, with fish, turtles and other aquatic species disappearing at an alarming rate. Soil fertility is also deteriorating, impacting agriculture and local livelihoods. Marginalized families rely on the river for drinking water, cooking, bathing, and irrigation, and the ongoing pollution puts their daily life and health at serious risk. Women and children are particularly vulnerable, suffering from diseases. Declining fish catches and crop yields reduce income, which in turn affects children’s education, nutrition, and overall social well-being. River pollution is therefore not only an environmental crisis but also a growing social and economic threat to vulnerable communities.
To raise awareness and demand action under the intiative of 350.org , Prantik, Youth for Policy Barishal Team and Chinho- চিহ্ন jointly organized the Campaign. The initiative calls for immediate, policy-based interventions to protect the Kirtankhola River and restore its ecological and social value. Together, we are raising our voices to ensure a safe, healthy and sustainable future for both the river and the communities that depend on it.
