The Commercial Hotel was established by Andrew Theoder Anderson in 1890. Contemporary reports described it as a substantial two-storey building with dining rooms, parlours, a large bar, and numerous bedrooms, built specifically to meet the needs of the growing mining community. Initially planned as the "Exchange Hotel," it opened as the Commercial Hotel and was promoted as offering some of the best accommodation on Tasmania's West Coast.

Welcome to Linda!

Known as the site of the former Royal Hotel, Linda was once a prominent mining town and terminus of the short-lived North Mount Lyell Railway.

A competitor of the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company, the North Mount Lyell Copper Company freighted ore from Linda to their smelters at Crotty, and then to the port of Pillinger. With the failure of the Crotty smelters, North Mount Lyell was absorbed by the Mount Lyell Company in 1903, and the railway was eventually closed in 1929.

With the closure of the smelters and railway, the towns along the line disappeared, but Linda continued to serve the mine for some time. The 1911 Tasmanian Census recorded Linda's population as 768, but today, it is fewer than 10.

This photograph of the Linda Valley is dated c.1920, and captures the railway station to the left, with the town in the mid-ground.

VALE EDWARD (TED) VICKERS
It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of former Director and Life Member of West Coast Heritage Ltd, Mr Edward (Ted) Vickers.
Ted made an enduring contribution to the West Coast community throughout his lifetime, serving in many roles including on the Board of West Coast Heritage, Councillor for the West Coast Council, and member of the Tasmanian Police Force, to name just a few. His commitment to public service and to the people of the region leaves a legacy that will be long remembered.
West Coast Heritage Ltd extends its heartfelt sympathy to the Vickers family during this difficult time.
