Weโ€™re disappointed to share that our much-loved middle pelican at the Yeppoon Lagoon has suffered significant damage as a result of some swimmers climbing on the sculpture, compromising its structural integrity.

Sadly, our feathered friend has a โ€œbroken neckโ€ and will need to be returned to his creator for specialised repairs.

This is the second time the pelicans have required repair due to climbing, and the necessary works will be costly to fix and replace the damaged components.

These landmark art installations have become an iconic part of the Yeppoon Lagoon and a popular photo stop for locals and the thousands of visitors who travel to our region each year.

Theyโ€™re designed to be admired and photographed โ€” but not climbed on โ›”

While one pelican is away โ€œresting and recovering,โ€ its two companions will remain on patrol at the lagoon๐ŸŠโ€โ™‚๏ธ

We know the community loves these sculptures as much as we do, so weโ€™re asking everyone to please help us protect them by keeping feet on the ground or in the water, and encouraging others to do the same.

Public art is something we can all take pride in โ€” and caring for it ensures it can be enjoyed for many more years to come. ๐Ÿ’™
