Yesterday, our TUMRA Steering Committee came together to review the progress of the program and discuss priorities moving forward.

We're pleased to report that all program requirements for the current reporting period have been successfully met, and the program continues to track strongly against its objectives.

The achievements we are seeing today are a direct reflection of the guidance, knowledge, and support provided by our mob. Through strong leadership, cultural knowledge, and a shared commitment to caring for Sea Country, the program has progressed immensely and continues to deliver positive outcomes for both Country and community.

A big thank you to all Steering Committee members, Traditional Owners, Rangers, and partners who continue to contribute their time, knowledge, and expertise. Together, we are ensuring our cultural responsibilities are upheld while creating a strong future for the next generation.

GAC was represented at the AIATSIS Summit this week, joining Indigenous leaders, organisations and communities from across Australia.

The summit provided a valuable opportunity to share knowledge, strengthen networks, and engage in important discussions around governance, culture, leadership, and the future of our communities.

The insights gained will help inform and strengthen our ongoing work for the benefit of Gunggandji people.

We thank AIATSIS for hosting such an inspiring event and look forward to applying the knowledge gained to support our community and future generations.

Gunggandji community members are advised that researchers from the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) will be working on Moore Reef and Elford Reef from 9–13 June 2026.

The research team will be undertaking site assessments and monitoring activities to support reef restoration projects aimed at improving the health and resilience of our reefs. Activities will include surveys, imaging, monitoring coral seeding devices, and assessing reef conditions.

This work forms part of ongoing efforts to support reef recovery and protect our Sea Country for future generations.

If you see the research vessel Komodo or researchers operating in the area during this period, please be aware that they are undertaking approved research activities.

For more information, please refer to the attached notice or contact AIMS directly using the details provided.

πŸ–€πŸ’›β€οΈ Today we celebrate Mabo Day and honour the legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo, whose determination and courage changed Australia forever.

The historic Mabo decision recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have always held rights and interests in their traditional lands and waters, overturning the doctrine of terra nullius.

As the Registered Native Title Body Corporate for Gunggandji People, Gunggandji Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC acknowledges the significance of this day and the pathway it created for the recognition and protection of Native Title rights across Australia.

Today, we remember Eddie Mabo's legacy and continue the work of caring for Country, protecting culture, and advocating for future generations.

🌊 Welcome Rhys and Josiah to the GAC team! πŸ™ŒπŸ½

We are excited to announce that Rhys and Josiah have been successfully selected to complete the Reef Intervention Training Program (RITP) over the next 10 weeks.

During this time, they will gain valuable hands-on experience working out on the reef, building their skills and knowledge in marine conservation and reef restoration activities across Sea Country.

As part of the program, they will:
βœ”οΈ Complete both Level 1 and Level 2 of the Reef Intervention Training Program
βœ”οΈ Undertake VET Dive Rescue Training
βœ”οΈ Gain practical field experience in reef monitoring and intervention activities
βœ”οΈ Strengthen their capacity to support future Sea Country management initiatives

This is a fantastic opportunity for both of them to grow their skills and continue building pathways into conservation and marine stewardship.

We wish Rhys and Josiah all the best throughout the program and look forward to seeing their journey over the coming weeks! 🌿🐠🌊

After several weeks of w**d spraying and with the cool season now setting in, it’s time to begin some burning on Country. πŸ”₯

With the rain coming and going, the Rangers have been kept busy managing the growth and spread of w**ds across Gunggandji Country. The team has been targeting invasive w**d species using a spray-and-burn approach β€” first poisoning the w**ds, monitoring the die-off, and respraying where necessary. 🌱

Following several weeks of die-off, the Rangers are now undertaking controlled burns through the affected areas. These burns help promote new growth of native grasses and plants, while also reducing and destroying w**d seeds that may have dropped during the growth stage of the invasive species.

We would like to raise an important concern that has been brought forward by our Elders and community members.

There is growing concern around the over-killing of dugong and turtle on our Sea Country. This is something that is being raised more and more, and it is something we all need to take seriously.

As Traditional Owners, we hold Native Title responsibilities to care for our land and sea the right way. Hunting is part of our culture β€” but it must be done respectfully, sustainably, and in line with our seasons and cultural practices.

If we don’t take care now, we risk losing these important species for future generations.

Gunggandji RNTBC is here to support our community, but we cannot do this alone. It is everyone’s responsibility to:

- Respect our Sea Country
- Hunt only when appropriate and in season
- Take only what is needed
- Think about our future generations

We will be organising community gatherings and yarns so we can come together, listen to our Elders, and talk about how we move forward together.

This is about looking after Country our way β€” with respect, culture, and responsibility.
