🔥Have you ever wondered why you're not supposed to put out a grease fire with water?

During training tonight, our firefighters simulated a kitchen fire with a pot of boiling oil. In these clips you can see Senior Firefighter Damon pouring water into the pot to show the reaction.

But why does this happen?

💧The water will instantly vaporize upon contact with the high temperatures of the grease fire and expand rapidly. This propels the burning oil into the air and will cause the fire to spread dramatically.

What should you do instead?

First of all it is important to remain calm! A small fire can wait long enough for you to take a deep breath. If it is safe to do so, try and turn the heat off first of all. From there, you have a couple of options at your disposal!
1. Wet chemical fire extinguisher. This extinguisher has an oatmeal coloured stripe to indicate that it is a wet chemical extinguisher.
2. Smother the fire using a fire blanket. If you don't have a fire blanket handy you can use the lid of the pot to prevent the fire from getting oxygen. Remember to leave the cover in place!

🚒ALWAYS remember to call 000, even if you get the fire out yourself. We are here to help and will come and make sure the fire will not reignite - especially in the case where you have smothered it with a fire blanket or lid.
