A great day out at Warrawong NAIDOC Family Fun Day!

Our Barnardos team were out in the community today at Darcy Wentworth Park, joining local families and services to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and community to the theme of '50 Years of Deadly'.

After the event was postponed due to rain in July, it was a wonderful opportunity to come together and connect with the Warrawong community.

Over six weeks, Year 5 and 6 students at Gulargambone Central School took part in Barnardos Rock and Water program, facilitated by Luu and Ziona.

Through a safe, engaging and creative environment, students were supported to strengthen important skills in resilience, emotional regulation, confidence and communication, while building positive relationships with their peers.

The impact was reflected in the students’ own words, with many sharing how the program helped them feel more confident, comfortable speaking up and better able to manage their emotions.

Programs like Rock and Water show the importance of creating spaces where children can feel supported, connected and confident in themselves and their communities 💫

After losing his wife unexpectedly, James* found himself raising his young daughter, Mia*, alone.

With no family nearby, mounting debt, rising rent and the threat of homelessness, he was doing everything he could to keep his children safe.

When James reached out to Barnardos, our Family Support team was there to help.

Together, we helped ease the family's immediate pressures with support for food, bills and housing. Mia started attending subsidised childcare, while James rebuilt his confidence through parenting support, creating a stronger, more stable future for his family.

Today, Mia is growing in confidence, learning new words every day, and James is no longer facing life's challenges alone.
