Have you seen foxgloves popping up in your area? Large outbreaks of this toxic w**d have been found in Lapoinya, Oldina, Preolenna, Hellyer Gorge and Yolla. The Waratah-Wynyard Council have committed to tackling this invasive w**d, which is spreading throughout our bush, farms and forests. Please keep an eye out for foxgloves in your area and report any sightings to the Council.

Foxgloves can be lethal, with toxins able to be absorbed through the skin it is extremely poisonous and even fatal to humans, wildlife and livestock. They spread at an incredible rate, as 1-2 million tiny seeds are produced from each plant, and these seeds can stay viable in the ground for around 10 years. The rate and intensity of the spread of foxgloves is increasing rapidly in Tasmania, so if we don’t treat the problem now it will become near impossible in the future.

For those new to this page, here are some of the reasons I am running for Councillor this year.

G’day, I’m Ken Ewington. I have lived in the Waratah-Wynyard area my whole life and have seen the farms, towns and community grow and change over the last 60 years. After a long career as a local business owner servicing the state, I have recently semi-retired and I am looking for meaningful ways to serve my community. The people in this community have given me so much over the years and I really want to give back by spending my time listening and advocating to their needs.

I will be applying as a candidate for the 2022 Waratah-Wynyard Council elections happening in October. I really want to represent the elderly and disabled in our community, as they are the heart of the town and are often unheard. I want to support the local youth by providing new opportunities for work and recreation. I want to see new walking and bike riding tracks for different abilities, with a map to be created of all the walking tracks and their grade of difficulty. I would like to see more green spaces for picnic areas and native vegetation, as well as safe roads, smart infrastructure, and accessibility for everyone. I want to see development in some of the smaller towns in the municipality, to encourage more local tourism and provide more opportunities for locals. I want to see the Council, forestry, and landowners be environmentally responsible and look after our natural landscapes by keeping on top of invasive w**d species. I want to listen to the needs of the community and be able to represent them at Council meetings so we can together make meaningful change. I also believe that things are often better discussed in person, so if you you’d like to have a face-to-face chat about any issues, concerns or goals you might have for the Waratah-Wynyard area, give me a call on 0459 143 331 or email [email protected] to arrange a time.

I will be at the U3A Wynyard Local Government Candidates Forum tomorrow, 26 September, at 10am til noon in the reception hall at the Wynyard Showgrounds. Come along if you would like to hear about my general ideas and policies for the Wynyard area.

G’day all, I’m at Wynyard Woolworths if you’d like to stop by and have a chat. Hope to see you there.
