16 Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery 16 Regiment Royal Australian Artillery, provides force protection for land forces against air threats

16 Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery (16 Regt, RAA), provides force protection for land forces against air and surface-to-surface fires through ground-based air defence (GBAD); a Sense, Warn, and Locate (SnWL) function through the Counter Rocket Artillery and Mortar (C-RAM) capability; and command and control of Joint Air Land Integration. The origins of the Regiment can be traced back to the 1

10th Light Anti-Aircraft Battery and 111th Light Anti-Aircraft Battery. The batteries amalgamated in 1969 to form the 16th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment (16 LAA), which was redesignated the 16th Air Defence Regiment (16 AD) in 1978. The formation of 16 ALR occurred on 16 January 2012, following the amalgamation of 16 AD with 1st Ground Liaison Group. Members of the Regiment have deployed to Vietnam, the Persian Gulf and Iraq, the Sinai and Timor-Leste. Recent times have seen personnel deploy to Afghanistan during 2010-13 as part of the C-RAM rotations on Operation SLIPPER and in support of other ADF activities throughout the world. The Regiment is currently based at Woodside Barracks in South Australia, and forms part of the 6th Brigade.

Tomorrow on ANZAC Day we reflect and acknowledge the courage and sacrifice of current and former servicemen and women. It is also a day to reflect on our own history and the service of our Regimental family.

Pictured here in 1968 is Corporal James Stone who was a Fitter and Turner responsible for the Bofors at 111th Light Anti-Aircraft Battery at Port Wakefield.

In a continued link to the past, his grandson, Major Brenton Stone, is the current Battery Commander for 111 Battery, and is pictured along with our newest equipment, the NASAMS High Mobility Launcher.
