🍟 Would you like chips with your photos?

We hold photo negatives from the 1960s which have vinegar syndrome. These films give off a vinegar smell due to acidic deterioration. Before they are lost forever, our Local Studies team have been digitising and putting the originals in freezers to preserve them.

Even in their deteriorated state, these photos remain incredibly valuable. They capture moments from Wollongong’s past and help tell the story of who we were. While we know the details behind many of these images, there are still gaps in the story. Photos in order:

🔨 A few changes are happening at Thirroul Library!

Here’s what’s coming from now to the end of December:
📖 A new study room
We're turning the former café space into a dedicated study room, giving students, workers and anyone needing a quiet spot a place to focus.

🌊 More flexible community spaces
The wall between the library and the Ocean Breeze room will be replaced with an operable glass wall, allowing us to open the space up for larger events and programs while still maintaining separate areas when needed.

🧹 A little courtyard maintenance

During construction, there will be some temporary changes in our Kid's and Youth Areas, including reduced floor space in that section. We'll do our best to minimise disruptions, and all regular library services and programs will continue as usual.

Have you moved recently or has your local library reopened after a little maintenance work? If yes, it might be time to change your reservation pickup location so you can collect your books a little closer to home. 📚

👉 Look through the photos below for our step-by-step instructions to change your pickup location using the Wollongong City Libraries app.

If you already have items waiting on the reservation shelf at your original pickup location, you'll need to collect them from that library, or give us a call to arrange a transfer.

🫶 A massive THANK YOU to everyone who entered our 2026 Illawarra Images Photography Prize.

Your photos will help shape the historical record of our region today and the impression of Wollongong future generations will have for years to come.

On Monday night we celebrated the exhibition opening at Wollongong Library and recognised the outstanding quality of your entries with our inaugural awards presentation. Family, friends and our community all came together to celebrate your photos capturing the people, places, events and everyday moments that make up our City.

You can view the exhibition in person at Wollongong Library until November, or online at any time via our website.
