• Any constructive feedback or criticism.

This week, we marked World Radiotherapy Awareness Day, recognising the vital role radiation therapy plays in cancer care and the skilled professionals behind every treatment.

Held on 7 September, the day commemorates the first patient treatment using a dedicated clinical linear accelerator at Hammersmith Hospital in London in 1953. Our communities can access specialist radiation therapy at both the Illawarra Cancer Care Centre in Wollongong and the Shoalhaven Cancer Care Centre in Nowra.

Behind every treatment is careful planning and collaboration. Radiation oncologists, radiation therapists, medical physicists, nurses and the wider cancer care team work together to plan and deliver safe, precise and personalised care.

With two world class facilities, our community can receive treatment closer to home – helping them stay connected to family, friends and the support networks that matter to them.

This World Radiotherapy Awareness Day, we celebrate the expertise, technology and teamwork helping deliver high-quality cancer care across our region. Thank you to our dedicated radiation therapy teams.

Protect the people in your life who are at risk of severe illness from common viruses.

Do you know someone who is:
🔹 pregnant
🔹 immunocompromised
🔹 living with a chronic health condition
🔹 undergoing cancer treatment
🔹 over 65

They are at risk of severe illness from common viruses. If they catch these common viruses, it can have serious consequences.

You can help keep them safe by staying home if you are unwell, and wearing a mask if you need to go out.

Don’t visit high-risk settings like hospitals or aged care facilities until you’re better.

Last week, Shoalhaven Hospital Children's Ward celebrated its first ever Party Day.

Adapted from Wollongong Hospital's Party Week, the day was full of fun and colourful costumes, with staff embracing the theme to bring smiles to some of our youngest patients.

While the day is all about fun, Party Day is also a reflection of the warm and welcoming environment our paediatric teams work hard to create every day. Alongside high-quality clinical care, staff help children and their families feel safe, comfortable and supported during their time in hospital.

The team loved seeing the smiles and hearing the laughter that filled the ward throughout the day and are excited to make Party Day an annual event, bringing a little extra joy to the Children's Ward each year.

🐾 Meet Luna 🐾
Luna is a gentle Golden Retriever therapy dog who is helping bring smiles, comfort and connection to children in the Children's Ward at Wollongong Hospital and students attending the Illawarra Hospital School as part of a NSW Department of Education program.

Luna and her fellow PAWS Pet Therapy Dogs regularly visit children and young people during their hospital stay, offering a welcome distraction, a calming presence and plenty of cuddles.

Therapy dogs are known to support children's wellbeing by helping reduce stress and anxiety, lifting mood, encouraging social interaction and creating positive experiences during what can be a challenging time. For students learning through the Illawarra Hospital School, a visit from Luna can make the school day feel a little brighter.

We are incredibly grateful to Luna and her furry friends, for the joy, comfort and companionship they bring to our children, families and staff each week. 💙🐶

With influenza on the rise in our community, we want our hospitals to stay as safe as possible. When you’re visiting loved ones, we ask that you follow this simple advice:

Please DO NOT visit if you’re feeling unwell with any respiratory symptoms, such as a cough, runny nose, or sore throat. We know it's tough when you have a loved one in hospital, but please help us keep them safe by staying home until you feel better!
You may be kindly asked to leave the ward if you develop symptoms during your visit.

We want to protect our vulnerable patients, and the staff who care for them, so everyone is safe and healthy.

🎉 Last week, our Wollongong Paediatric Unit was filled with colour, costumes, laughter and plenty of smiles for the eighth annual Party Week.

With a different theme each day, Party Week gives our young patients something fun to look forward to and helps to bring a little extra joy and normality to their hospital stay. Plus, our staff have just as much fun!

From creative costumes to Where’s Wally Day, our staff embraced every theme with incredible enthusiasm - helping children feel like kids first and patients second. ❤️

Party Week is also a wonderful reminder of the care our paediatric teams provide every day. Alongside high-quality clinical care, our doctors, nurses and allied health teams work hard to help children and families feel safe, supported and cared for during their time in hospital.

What began at Wollongong Hospital has now grown into a statewide initiative, with hospitals across NSW joining in the fun.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s Party Week such a memorable one for our patients and families. 🎈

This World Physiotherapy Day, we're celebrating the dedicated physiotherapists helping patients regain strength, confidence and independence every day.

Meet Sam, a physiotherapist from Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District who works closely with patients recovering from stroke and other neurological and physical conditions.

After a stroke, even everyday movements can become difficult. Using specialised rehabilitation equipment for combined cognitive and physical training, Sam helps patients recover from difficult health challenges. Swipe to see how patients use these tools!

Whether it's taking those first independent steps, returning to everyday activities or reaching personal milestones, physiotherapists play a vital role in empowering patients to get back to living their lives.
