👁️👣 Out for a stroll around campus and spotted this absolute beauty!

Can you guess what it is? 👀
If you said the Australian Swamp Orchid (Phaius australis), you're correct! ✅

Also known as the Southern Swamp Orchid or Swamp Lily, it's one of Australia's largest and most spectacular ground orchids. With its striking reddish-brown, mauve and white flowers perched on tall spikes that can reach up to 2 metres high, it's certainly hard to miss. Flowering from September to November, it's a true showstopper!

Did you know this stunning native orchid is endangered?😲😧

Found along Australia's east coast, from Cooktown in Queensland to Lake Cathie in New South Wales, it thrives in swampy forest environments, including Melaleuca paperbark swamps and wet coastal areas.

We are incredibly fortunate to have this specimen as part of our horticulture resources, providing students with the opportunity to learn about, appreciate and help conserve one of Australia's remarkable native plant species.💚🌿

Many hands ..... build strong bench seats! 🖤❤️💛

Look what our friends from Namatjira Haven have been up to over the past few weeks - in the carpentry workshop on the tools making bench seats for around the yarning circle back at Namatjira Haven. These will be a welcome addition to the space. Healing, growing, learning, laughing - stronger together. 🪚🔨❤️

How good is the sense of achievement when you make something yourself. 😊

🧑‍🍳👨‍🍳 Fresh from the oven!

Straight from the hands of our talented Patisserie Chefs comes a French favourite: the Palmier, or as some call it, "the heart of France." ❤️

Made from nothing more than puff pastry and sugar, these little beauties are proof that simple ingredients can create something truly special. A bit of rolling, a dusting of sugar, a few clever folds ( think pastry origami at its finest!), and presto... buttery, crisp, caramelised perfection.

👀 The only tricky part? Watching them bake! Leave them a little too long and they'll race from golden and delicious to scorched before you know it.

Last week our Horticulture team welcomed 25 industry representatives onto campus as part of a series called "Pulling back the shade cloth" where the Northern Rivers branch of the NGINA (NSW Nursery Association) organises visits to local nurseries etc. This provides a valuable first hand opportunity for the local industry leaders to come and see the facilities, touring the glass house and our nursery areas, checking out various plant species and hearing what training opportunities we provide.
Head Teacher Rob Davies, was discussing the Cert III Nursery qualification that is only offered in 2 places across the state, here at Wollongbar and at Richmond in Sydney. This qualification is taught as a combination model with workshops and online (via Teams) but now also as a face to face model.

It was a great morning, finishing up with morning tea, a chance to network, chat with the teaching staff, enjoy a cuppa and a slice of John's amazing Bavarian cheesecake 😋
