FLOOD WARNINGS SURVEY - MAY 2025 EVENT

Were you affected by the floods in the Mid North Coast of New South Wales in May 2025?

We want to hear your story.

An online survey is now open to share your story, with a chance to win a $150 Woolies voucher.

This independent research is funded by Natural Hazards Research Australia (NHRA), is being undertaken by Macquarie University, and is supported by NSW State Emergency Service (SES) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

We want to hear from anyone who was affected by the floods.

We are especially interested in hearing from people who received flood warnings or had to (or were told to) evacuate during the floods.

Every story is important.

Your input could influence future emergency management responses regarding flood warnings, flood evacuation procedures, and understanding of community vulnerabilities in order to improve safety and resilience to future flooding.

⛈️ Storm Damage Update ⛈️

Over 400 incidents were reported to the NSW SES due to severe storms on Wednesday across the Central Coast, Hunter Coast, Hunter Valley and Mid-North Coast.

🦺 Crews are continuing to respond to fallen trees and significant roof and property damage.

⚡️ Over 12,000 properties are currently without power. Ausgrid are working to restore power to these areas. Assume all fallen powerlines are live and keep at least 8 metres away.

UPDATE: This warning has now been updated to include more areas. Please see our most recent posts for more information.

⚠️ A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for people in parts of the Mid North Coast and Northern Tablelands Forecast Districts.

Severe thunderstorms with LARGE HAILSTONES and DAMAGING WINDS have developed in the Mid North Coast and are likely to impact the warning area over the next several hours.

Locations which may be affected include Taree, Kempsey, Comboyne, Gloucester, Forster and Wauchope.

Make safe decisions:
🔸 Move your car under cover or away from trees.
🔸 Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
🔸 Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
🔸 Unplug computers and appliances and avoid using the phone during the storm.
🔸 Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.

Warnings may be updated or expand to cover a wider area throughout the afternoon.

A widespread storm outbreak is expected to develop over central and northern New South Wales this afternoon.

There is a risk of severe storms across the east and north of the state, including Wollongong, Sydney, the Central Coast and Newcastle.

Any severe storms today will carry the risk of large hail (2cm or more across) which can damage roofs, cars and crops, as well as damaging wind gusts, which can lead to power outages and property damage.

So yesterday 23rd of September our unit said farewell to our 16 year old medium storm truck and welcome to our New light storm truck

The new vehicle increases our unit capability to be able to respond better to assist the community in our local area

The Bureau of Meteorology have issued another warning for DAMAGING WINDS 🍃

A Severe Weather Warning for DAMAGING WINDS is active for people in Snowy Mountains and parts of Mid North Coast, Hunter, Illawarra, South Coast, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, Lower Western, Northern Tablelands, North West Slopes and Plains and South West Slopes Forecast Districts.

UPDATE at 2:39pm: Warning area now includes Riverina and Lower Western Forecast Districts for damaging winds with showers and storms about a cold front crossing southern NSW.

Damaging winds are redeveloping about the eastern ranges and in the far west today. Blizzards are possible for alpine areas.

📍 Locations which may be affected include Goulburn, Scone, Katoomba, Cooma, Wentworth, Bowral, Braidwood, Nowendoc, Thredbo, Perisher and Gloucester, Albury, Deniliquin, Griffith, Hay, Narrandera and Corowa.

NSW SES advises that you should:
🔸 Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
🔸 Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
🔸 Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
🔸 Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.

The NSW SES advises people in the following area(s) to MONITOR CONDITIONS of the flooding on the Manning River:

You should monitor conditions by checking warnings issued by NSW SES on their website and page, listening to your local ABC radio station, and following the latest weather information from the Bureau of Meteorology online.

What are we expecting?

The Bureau of Meteorology advises moderate to heavy rainfall has eased and no significant rainfall totals are forecast for the next few days. Flooding is no longer expected on the Manning River.

Based on predictions from the Bureau of Meteorology, the following areas may be impacted by floodwaters:

- Low-lying areas along rivers, creeks and streams
- Low-lying roads, bridges and causeways
