Yesterday Whittingham held their Annual AGM.

Part of the meeting included some presentations to members.

A big congratulations to John Moore who was presented with his 50yrs service medal.

Also presented to some of our members was the Premiers Citation medal and certificate for assisting on the frontline with the 2022-2023 floods.

Our Member of the year was presented to Mick Cobban. This is voted on by the members for a member they believe has gone above just showing up for call outs. Mick is a valuable part of the Whittingham team and is always assisting and mentoring with all brigade activities. Congratulations Mick

These presentations demonstrate the commitment and dedication our volunteers have for the service, congratulations to all.

Detectives attached to the Rural Crime Prevention Team are appealing for information following a series of recent grass fires in the Hunter Valley.

Between Monday 2 March 2026 and Friday 24 April 2026, a total of 24 grass fires have been reported in areas surrounding Singleton.

The fires have occurred along the Golden Highway at Warkworth, and Mitchell Line of Road, Jerrys Plains Road, and Putty Road at Mount Thorley.

Of the 24 fires, 17 have been classified as suspicious or the cause undetermined; and occurred on weekdays between 12pm and 5pm.

Due to the extremely dry conditions, police and firefighters warn there is a significant risk of a major fire that could impact local homes, businesses and the broader community.

Hunter Valley Police District Crime Manager, Detective Inspector Andrew Wheatley, said the pattern of fires is concerning.

“The frequency, timing and locations of these fires raise serious concerns, particularly given how dry the conditions are across the Hunter Valley,” Det Insp Wheatley said.

“A fire under these conditions has the potential to spread rapidly and place lives, property and emergency services personnel at risk.”

Detective Inspector Wheatley said investigators are urging anyone who was travelling through the affected areas to assist.

“We are specifically asking motorists who were in these locations between midday and 5pm on weekdays to review any dashcam footage they may have,” he said.

“Even something that might seem insignificant – such as a vehicle pulled over or a person behaving unusually – could be critical to our investigation.”

Hunter Valley Police are working closely with the NSW Rural Fire Service and are appealing to residents and road users to report any suspicious behaviour.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Branxton Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Information can be provided anonymously.

Currently we have crews assisting out at Yengo with back burning operations to contain a fire. These operations will continue into the night and tomorrow.

Crews are working into the evening to gain containment on a fire burning in the Garland Valley and Yengo National Park area.
Backburning operations have been occurring this afternoon and likely to continue into the night to limit the fire spread into inaccessible terrain. This will cause an increase in smoke being produced but there is no need for alarm.
Residents are urged to monitor the situation and remained informed through the Hazards Near Me App.

Yesterday saw Whittingham along with other Brigades respond to numerous calls of fire. Crews responded and all 3 fires were contained quickly and safely by brigades.

As training night for us is a Thursday night the team utilised one of the fires to go and do a patrol, walk around and put out any hot spots that had shown up.
Whittingham alongside Bulga Rural Fire Brigade and Deputy Group 4 discussed how the fire behaved, the importance or ensuring all hotspots are extinguished and possible ignition points.

🚒🔥 NEW UNIFORM TRIAL🔥🚒

You may notice Whittingham members looking a little different over the next few months.

We have been selected as part of a State Wide trial for a new look and feel uniform.

This trial is all about testing the new uniform designs and how it works on the ground and in the real world of fire fighting and within the community.

Things we will be considering and giving feed back on will be

🔥 how comfortable and the fit of the uniform
🔥 how practical and the visability on the fireground
🔥 the durability in all weathers
🔥 how our community responds to the change

We will wearing the new uniforms over the next few months to all activities that are approved to do so to be able to share the feedback to help in what works well and doesn’t.

So if you see us our and about please also share your thoughts with is on the new look🚒

Playing with fire, training with purpose - a fantastic morning with Bulga Rural Fire Brigade and Mirannie Rural Fire Service Brigade practicing branch techniques and flame management using the gas fire prop at Hunter Valley Fire Control.

We covered how different spray patterns can be used to capture, manage and extinguish fires, and how these can be applied in a bushfire setting.

We also practiced 5 man fog approach - an excellent team building exercise - and relay pumping.

Many thanks to FF Tash from Bulga RFB for these amazing pics.
