Whitby Town Council has resolved to award the Honorary Freedom of the Town of Whitby to the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME).
The decision was made at an Extraordinary Meeting of the Council on Tuesday 9th June 2026, in recognition of REME’s distinguished service, its contribution to the defence of the United Kingdom, and its longstanding association with Whitby.
The Honorary Freedom of the Town is the highest civic honour the Council can bestow.
REME has a strong and continuing connection with Whitby through civic, ceremonial, remembrance, educational, and community activities, including the annual Remembrance Sunday Parade and tributes at Heroes Bridge on the West Pier.
The Town Mayor of Whitby, Cllr Sandra Turner, said:
“Whitby has a long and proud relationship with the Armed Forces, and it is entirely fitting that the Council should recognise the distinguished service of REME in this way. The granting of the Honorary Freedom of the town is the highest honour Whitby Town Council can bestow. It is a mark of our gratitude, respect, and continuing friendship with REME.”
Arrangements are now being finalised for a Freedom Parade and civic ceremony to take place in Whitby on Saturday 25th July 2026. Further details will be published in due course.
