Keeping kids safe starts with all of us. 💙

This week (6-12 September) is Queensland Child Protection Week, a reminder that every child deserves to feel safe, supported and valued.

Whether it's at school, sport, community organisations, services or online, we all have a role to play in creating environments where children can thrive.

Queensland organisations working with children are now required to follow 10 Child Safe Standards and a Universal Principle of cultural safety, helping to ensure children's safety and wellbeing remain at the centre of everything we do.

At QCOSS, we know that children thrive when they're surrounded by strong families, connected communities and the support they need to reach their full potential. That's why we started the campaign, working towards a Queensland where every child can grow up safe, healthy and well.

QCOSS is proud to have joined more than 50,000 signatories calling on the Australian Government to introduce a Human Rights Act.

Human rights help ensure every person can live with dignity, participate in their community and access the opportunities they need to thrive.

An Australian Human Rights Act would help embed the values of equality, dignity and justice in government decision-making, while strengthening protections for people across Australia.

Coordinated by Human Rights Law Centre and Amnesty International Australia, this petition sends a clear message that now is the time to act to enshrine protection for human rights in law.

Every child deserves the chance to be healthy, safe, learning, connected and thriving.

But right now, more than 60 per cent of Queensland parents and carers say they're struggling to afford everyday essentials like food and bills.

When families are under pressure, children feel it too. It can affect their health, education and wellbeing.

The good news? This isn't inevitable.

The campaign is calling for a whole-of-government Families Strategy that brings together housing, health, education and community services to ensure every child has access to the supports they need to thrive.

Queensland's community sector is there for people every day.

From supporting families facing cost-of-living pressures to responding to housing insecurity and domestic and family violence, community organisations are an essential part of the social infrastructure that helps Queenslanders thrive.

Community organisations deliver critical services, but they also provide valuable insight into what's happening in local communities and where systems can work better. Strong services and strong advocacy go hand in hand.

As demand for support grows, many organisations are facing increasing financial pressure. Fair indexation, full-cost funding and greater funding certainty are essential to ensuring services can continue to meet community needs now and into the future.

We're committed to working constructively with the Queensland Government to build a strong, sustainable community sector and better outcomes for Queenslanders.

Every day, community organisations support Queenslanders through some of life's toughest challenges.

At a time when communities are grappling with housing pressures, rising living costs, and concerns about the safety and wellbeing of women and children, it's important government and the sector can work together in partnership, share honest feedback, and focus on better outcomes for Queenslanders.

This morning, QCOSS CEO Aimee McVeigh spoke with 4BC about the value of community organisations and the importance of ensuring they can continue to advocate for the people they serve.

We're also calling for sustainable funding and fair contracting arrangements that allow services to focus on supporting communities, not managing uncertainty.
