All our rosie volunteers especially new volunteers who have joined up over 2025-2026 or those who need a brush up were given a great pruning demo by our experienced pruner Marlene 2 weeks ago.

The 4 Ds are pruning dying canes, diagonal canes, diseased canes and diddly bits ( blind shoots etc). Depending how old the rose bush or type is, we can cut a third down but we ask and check. The rosebed usually lets us know . We look at the shape too. We cut with sharp clean secateres across or on a 45°angle about 1cm above an outward bud. No candelabras where 3 canes grow make it two. Saw off any branches that are too old and keep that nice fat new red/green new canes if you have them. Remove some old branches if needed or if you can, to promote new canes. It all depends on the rosebed. Each rose/rosebed is different, so talk amongst yourselves, always work in a team and always when in doubt ask a red dot experienced person.

As our rose garden is a public garden we cut our roses a bit different to a home garden . Its not pruned too hard or too low as we dont like them too low ( our backs) and its more to promote more roses blooming over a long period.

A group of our V.S.R.G volunteers were able do a tour of Parliment House this week. They learnt about the history of the Victorian Parliament, the Houses of Parliament and the design and decorative arts of the building. They also toured the gardenesque style gardens at street level and the rooftop garden planted with a selection of Australian plants. All found it most interesting. Thankyou for the invite and tour Matthew Hilakari MP. Much appreciated.

Our Festoon Team have started early pruning the festoons. We do this as it helps us finish in August before the spring leaves burst on the scene. BEFORE pruning the ramblers & climbers and AFTER. What a difference a prune makes Victoria State Rose Garden, Parks Victoria

"They shall grow not old,
as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them,
nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."
