Day 15 — The Push-Up Challenge

Today's target is 160 push-ups — for the 16% of LGBTIQA+ young people who reported they have attempted su***de.

Many LGBTIQA+ young people face challenges that can affect mental wellbeing, including discrimination, rejection, bullying and social isolation. These experiences—not a person's identity—are linked to higher levels of stress, anxiety and depression within LGBTIQA+ communities.

Research shows that welcoming and inclusive spaces can dramatically improve mental health outcomes for LGBTIQA+ young people. Feeling accepted at home, school, work, and in the community, alongside strong and supportive relationships, helps reduce distress and protect well-being.

A few protective factors that support wellbeing:

• Affirming spaces. Environments that respect identity and expression matter.

• Connection. Supportive friends, family and peers can reduce isolation.

• Inclusive mental health care. Culturally safe support improves outcomes.

If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available. You are not alone, and your mental health matters.

QLife — free LGBTIQA+ peer support and referral.

Minus18 — support for LGBTIQA+ youth.

PFLAG Australia — peer support for parents, families and friends of LGBTIQA+ loved ones.

1st of June is Smoke Alarm Action Day.

Fire and Rescue NSW, together with fire services across Australia, is urging people to check they have a working smoke alarm.

Last year, nearly half the homes damaged or destroyed by fire in NSW did not have a working smoke alarm! Be smart and take part in Smoke Alarm Action Day, and test your smoke alarm works! A working smoke alarm is your best early warning sign of a fire, giving you and your loved ones the chance to get out, stay out, and call Triple Zero (000).

Last night we joined Fire and Rescue NSW Station 359 Lawson, Fire and Rescue NSW Station 361 Leura, Fire and Rescue NSW Station 343 Katoomba, running a multi-station drill being co-ordinated by the Blue Mountains Duty Commander.

The objective was to simulate a mock bush fire at the end of a residential cul-de-sac street with a single tanker appliance running hoses attacking the fire.
Multiple pump appliances were tasked with relay pumping water from a hydrant at the top of the street down to the tankers water reserve.

This was a great opportunity we were grateful to be apart of for some realistic, practical and dynamic training alongside our neighbouring stations, to work on pumping operations, inter-station coordination, communication and teamwork.

Thank you to all stations and fire fighters who were involved, and the Duty Commander for facilitating and organising the Drill.
