Darling Downs Moreton Rabbit Board

Darling Downs Moreton Rabbit Board The DDMRB's key role is to protect Queensland’s environment and economy from the impacts of rabbits.

The Darling Downs Moreton Rabbit Board maintains the 555km rabbit-proof fence that runs from Mt Gipps near Rathdowney through to Goombi near Chinchilla, where it meets the Wild Dog Barrier Fence. This fence is absolutely essential in keeping Queensland as the only Australian state that is relatively rabbit free! The DDRMB also works to educate and inform Queenslanders aboutdamage rabbits do, the b

est ways to control them, and why Queensland tries to keep rabbits out. Unfortunately, while rabbits may be cute, they're also very destructive! Construction on the DDMRB fence began in 1890s after rabbits were introduced to Australia and quickly became a plague, breeding extremely fast, eating huge amounts of pasture and crops, competing with native Australian animals for shelter and food, and destroying sapling trees, fields of grass, native plants, and even ringbarking bigger trees. Since the fence's construction Queensland has remained the only Australian state that is relatively rabbit free. As the state that hosts the majority of Australia's large-scale food production and farming, it's critical to protect our agriculture, farmers, and food supply from rabbits, that can quickly decimate entire farms. Queensland is also home to a number of precious native plants and animals that are a risk from wild rabbit populations, so it's essential to protect them too. We love our beautiful sunshine state, and we need your help protecting our delicate environment. It was great to be part of the recent field day hosted by West Moreton Landcare Group 🌱
Our Compliance Team was pleased to discuss and demonstrate practical, on-ground rabbit control. It was a great opportunity to share knowledge, answer questions and connect with local landholders.
Thanks to the West Moreton Landcare Group for hosting and to everyone who came along and got involved—we appreciate your interest and commitment to effective rabbit management 👏

Rabbits may not predate on native animals like other invasive species, and yet they are one of the most devastating introduced species this country has ever seen.🌾

Whether it’s devouring crops, destroying soil integrity or outcompeting other ground-dwelling animals, rabbits cause significant land destruction and cost the Australian agriculture sector more than $200 million each year.

They also pose a threat to hundreds of native animals and plants. 🌱

Our CEO Jack Gough spoke to the Saturday Paper, calling on the Government to fund a new rabbit biocontrol.

“Mother Nature is very good at exponential growth. It can feel like there's almost none there and then overnight, suddenly you're like, why are there rabbits everywhere.” he said.

Exclusive: Australia faces 10 years of rabbit plagues due to the “dumb” decision not to fund a new virus to control numbers of the invasive species that are wreaking havoc across the country.
