SOUTHERN DOWNS ON SHOW ✨

Earlier this week we were delighted to welcome members of the Australian Society of Travel Writers to the Southern Downs, in partnership with Granite Belt Wine Country and Queensland Country.

From local flavours and vineyard views to stunning landscapes and warm hospitality, the visit was a wonderful opportunity to showcase some of the people and experiences that make our region so special.

Mayor Melissa Hamilton, Cr Russell Wantling and Cr Morwenna Harslett attended the official ASTW Long Lunch, representing Council and meeting with members and tourism operators from across the region.

We look forward to seeing the Southern Downs featured in stories and travel inspiration shared far and wide! 🌏

Mayor Melissa Hamilton, the Member for Southern Downs James Lister MP, and Councillors Harslett, Wantling and Deane met with the Hon Ann Leahy MP, Minister for Local Government and Water to discuss the region’s water security and the Australian government’s recently announced changes to the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

Water security remains the key advocacy priority for Council. Council officers have commenced monthly meetings with the Department for Local Government and Water to address both urban and agricultural water supply solutions for Stanthorpe and surrounds.

Council shares Minister Leahy’s concerns regarding the recent Disaster Recovery announcements which mean an Australian government reduction from 75% to 50% of funding when disasters happen, leaving councils and the Queensland government to fund the shortfall. Council will work collectively with the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) and other Queensland councils to advocate for reversal of this funding cut.

LIGHT UP PURPLE FOR LIPOEDEMA AWARENESS MONTH //

The Southern Downs is lighting up purple throughout June 2026 to raise awareness of Lipoedema, a chronic and often misunderstood condition that affects the way fat is distributed in the body.

Lipoedema Awareness Month shines a light on the experiences of those living with this progressive, painful condition, which disproportionately affects women and is often misdiagnosed or dismissed. This June, we're supporting efforts to educate, advocate, and push for better care and recognition for those with lipoedema.

In the Southern Downs, the Warwick Town Hall, SDRC Stanthorpe Administration Building, and the London Plane Trees in Weeroona Park and the Piazza in Stanthorpe will light up purple in solidarity.

NOTE: As of 11:15am, water has been restored to the below area.

📍EMERGENCY WATER SHUTDOWN // Hillcrest and Folkestone Street, Stanthorpe

Please note that there is currently an emergency water shutdown affecting properties on Hillcrest and Folkestone Street, Stanthorpe. Water supply is expected to be restored by 12.30pm.

During this time, residents should take care around water heating systems and other water appliances.

Local residents may experience some pressure fluctuations and slight water discolouration once supply is back online. However, this will disappear after the water has run through the tap for a short while.

Council thanks the community for its cooperation and patience.

Deputy Mayor Sheryl Windle and Councillor Russell Wantling were pleased to attend the opening of Warwick Art Gallery’s newest exhibitions today.

The Mistletoe Waltz by Sunshine Coast artist Rosie Lloyd-Giblett transforms the Western Queensland landscape into a captivating story of regeneration, connection and care through immersive installations, drawings and sculptural works. Inspired by the delicate ecological dance between mistletoe and the painted honeyeater on Bigambul Country, this thought-provoking exhibition invites audiences to reimagine the possibilities of mutual flourishing between people and place.
📆 Until 11 July

Award-winning Stanthorpe model maker Shane Donnelly’s exhibition features detailed scale models of Queenslanders, cottages and historic homes from the 1880s to the 1960s. Celebrating the nostalgia of Queensland's architectural heritage, each bespoke piece is meticulously handcrafted using traditional techniques without laser cutting or 3D printing.
📆 Until 11 July

Drawn Together: Portraits of Queensland Homes features 36 pastel and mixed media works created in partnership with the Children’s Hospital Foundation during workshops in April. The Warwick Art Gallery acknowledges the Foundation’s support of more than 1,900 families across Warwick and the Southern Downs in the past year, with a digital donation point in the exhibition inviting visitors to contribute to this vital work.
