Wild island opportunity

If you are keen to escape the rat race and spend six months on a sometimes wet and often windswept island, watching the swells of the Southern Ocean, we might have just the gig for you.

The Parks and Wildlife Service is seeking volunteer caretakers for the coming two years on the remote and spectacular Maatsuyker Island in Tasmania’s south-west.

Maatsuyker Island is approximately 10 kilometres off the coast and is within the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. The lighthouse is Australia’s southernmost lighthouse station.

We are looking for self-sufficient people that are healthy, have a proven ability to live and work in remote locations, and are able to carry out caretaking services including maintenance of grounds, buildings and plant and equipment. Additionally, they are required to carry out daily weather observations for the Bureau of Meteorology, for which they receive training and payment.

Transport to the island by helicopter is provided. Volunteers are sought for periods of six months from either September to March or March to September. For safety reasons at the remote location, couples or individuals (minimum of two) are preferred.

A Maatsuyker Island Volunteer Caretaker and Weather Observer Information Package is available from either the Parks and Wildlife Service website www.parks.tas.gov.au or www.wildcaretas.org.au.
Applications close on 30 January 2017.

Lovely spot

These magnificent rock stacks can be found virtually anywhere along the Great Ocean Road from Otways to Warrnambool. Childers Cove in my opinion is more magnificent than those at 12 Apostles. And way way way less crowded. Well worth a visit.

Be aware of this cannon firing tonight between 830pm and 9pm.

This next few weeks we will be focused on our state heritage listed garrison area of the village.

Saturday we will be firing the cannon between 830pm and 9pm.

August 11th we will be receiving one of the most significant items to be added to our collection relating to the garrison history.

The 1861 item was presented to the then very patriotic Warrnambool men known as patriotic Citizen Soldiers of Victoria.

The piece was presented by the "ladies of the Warrnambool district" to the garrison of volunteers in 1861 protecting the very young town on Warrnambool from perceived threats by European powers.

The piece had been hidden away in a display cupboard for many many years and will now be made available for public display to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village.

Very excited to soon be able to show these pieces soon and will add a great deal to the cultural heritage of our city.
