This week Mpower proudly recognises Elder Abuse Awareness, a time to reflect on respect, dignity and the value of older people in our community and to celebrate inspiring individuals like Jackie.
Jackie is living proof that life doesn’t slow down with age in fact, she didn’t retire until she was 77, after dedicating 39 years as a receptionist at the Warrnambool Base Hospital, a job she truly loved. Now Jackie is still going strong and says she hardly has any free time between lunches, morning and afternoon teas, aqua aerobics, walking to stay active and trips to Melbourne to see shows (with Thursdays reserved as her well-earned day off!).
When she’s home, you’ll likely find Jackie baking up a storm. Her favourites include yo-yos, Anzacs, cupcakes, and of course, her famous Christmas pudding.
Since retiring, Jackie has continued to embrace life, travelling overseas and enjoying incredible adventures. She values the strong connections she has built in her community, though she acknowledges it’s not always easy for everyone to feel the same sense of belonging.
In true Jackie style, she and her friends, born in 1938, started their own tradition of “1938 parties” with an impressive 26 people attending in 2026. This has been a tradition for decades, and Jackie loves the annual catch ups!
Jackie’s life has been full of love and resilience. Married to Allan in 1960, they raised three wonderful children, and Jackie later cared for Allan through illness, supported by her family and friends, until his passing over 20 years ago.
When asked about ageism, Jackie says it comes down to how people treat you:
“Some people talk to you as if you don’t understand basic English.” She also reminds us that while many people aren’t confident to speak up, she certainly is and she encourages others to do the same.
Jackie believes our community can do better by sharing information about available supports and activities, so no one misses out simply because they don’t know what’s out there. For her, places like Aqua Zone, which she has attended for 22 years, have been key to building friendships and staying connected.
Her outlook on life? “I wouldn’t be dead for quids.”
Jackie’s story reminds us of the importance of connection to our community, family and friends.
