Peel Harvey Biosecurity Group

Peel Harvey Biosecurity Group OUR VISION
See the impact of priority pests reduced to a minimal or acceptable level. The Peel Harvey Biosecurity Group formed in 2014.

This came after a public meeting where frustrations and concerns were raised about escalating numbers of weeds and feral animals. The group is a not-for-profit organisation. It’s committee is comprised of community and local government representatives from Serpentine-Jarrahdale, Murray, Waroona, Harvey and Mandurah. It also welcomes membership from any person who owns land or manages property with

in these areas. The Peel Harvey Biosecurity Group values the support of the WA State Government, with formal recognition by the Minister for Agriculture and Food coming in late 2017. It also receives ongoing support from the Department of Primary Industries and Rural Development, the Peel-Harvey Catchment Council, and local organisations such as Landcare SJ and the Waroona Landcare Centre.

Here at PHBG, biosecurity is what we do — but biodiversity is what we're protecting. Native animals are an essential part of healthy ecosystems, which in turn support productive and resilient agricultural landscapes. Looking after endangered species like our beautiful black cockatoos helps ensure that natural systems continue to thrive for generations to come.

Our friends at Landcare SJ Inc are hosting a special event next week: an evening with Rick Dawson from Australian Black Cockatoo Specialists. If you're interested in black cockatoo conservation and learning more about these iconic birds, we'd love to see you there. 🖤

Details on Humanitix 👉

Rick Dawson will talk on Black cockatoo conservation, Breeding ecology & nesting behaviour, Habitat management, especially nesting hollows

Monitoring cameras capture all sorts of wildlife moments, but the PHBG team unanimously agrees that this phascogale, proudly displaying his assets for the camera, deserves special recognition (we do, of course, refer to his impressive tail).

When we see native species in their natural habitat on our cameras, it's a reminder of what we're working to protect. These animals depend on healthy habitats and balanced ecosystems, and effective biosecurity plays an essential role in supporting biodiversity across the Peel-Harvey region.

That's why we're asking community members to complete our 2026 survey. Your feedback helps us understand local pest management priorities and guide future efforts to support both productive landscapes and the native plants and animals that call our region home.

South West orchardists are invited to join Leschenault Catchment Council's upcoming farm walk at Hearman Ag, exploring how precision irrigation, soil moisture monitoring and smart infrastructure can improve water efficiency and farm resilience.

A great opportunity to see practical solutions in action and hear from growers already making them work. Register via Humanitix:

A farm walk for South West orchardists wanting to learn more about improving water quality in a drying climate.

🐖The Pig Brig is a large, portable trapping system with a flexible mesh design and continual feed system. The trap allows many feral pigs to enter but prevents them escaping, improving whole-mob captures and reducing trap avoidance. 🥓

At this demonstration on 24 June, you can see how the Pig Brig works, including:
- trap setup and operation
- the importance of pre-feeding your trapping sites
- pick up practical tips and tricks for effective feral pig control.

Plus, discover how the Peel Harvey Biosecurity Group can support you in developing and delivering successful pig control programs.

Feral pigs are one of Australia’s most destructive invasive species, causing serious damage to agriculture, waterways, native habitat and infrastructure — and they can be extremely difficult to control once established.

Because pigs breed quickly and adapt fast, successful control usually requires ongoing effort, local knowledge and a combination of methods such as trapping and ground shooting. Coordinated action between neighbours and landholders is often key to achieving long-term results.

Professional pest controllers and experienced shooters play an important role in feral pig management across Australia, bringing practical expertise, monitoring skills and on-ground knowledge that can make control programs far more effective.

Tree hollows provide important shelter, nesting and resting spaces for many of our native animals, but competition with feral species can be fierce! 🦆🦉

We recently had the pleasure of running the first in a series of nest box building workshops, funded through the Shire of Murray's Healthy Habitats Program and our own Pesky Pests school outreach program.

During the session, students from North Dandalup Primary School learnt about hollow competition between native and introduced species and explored how to identify which trees on the school grounds are most likely to contain natural hollows.

Students then built four nesting boxes that will soon be installed within the Shire of Murray, creating valuable habitat for native species such as possums, owls and ducks.

A huge thank you to the students and their teacher for their enthusiasm and hard work during the workshop! 💕

Thanks also go out to Landcare SJ Inc for generously lending us their power drills for the workshop 🔩😇

Feeling inspired? Keep an eye on our page to find out how you can get involved during the July school holidays! Do also check out the Pesky Pests website for fun activities and upcoming events 👉 https://www.schools.phbg.org/
